With all of the interest in salmon fishing , the Department of Fish and Wildlife wardens have been active in citing boaters for two basic violations : fishing inside of the MLPA outside of Bodega Head and keeping coho salmon . The MLPA violation is a misdemeanor that carries a fine of approximately $ 1000.00 plus court fees .

Wide-Open Salmon Fishing Continues

SAN FRANCISCO – If you want to hook big , bold king salmon outside of the Golden Gate , now is the time to do it .

The 25 anglers on a half day trip aboard the Bass Tub on Sunday , July 8 , landed limits of salmon to 22 pounds , reported Aaron Anfinson , Captain of the Bass Tub .

“ Because of rough weather , we decided to fish the calmer seas off the Marin County Coast ,” said Anfinson . “ We picked up the salmon at a variety of depths , from as shallow as 12 feet to as deep as 60 feet . We were done by 10 a . m . with limits of kings averaging 10 pounds each .”

On a couple of trips where the anglers limited out trolling for salmon early , Anfinson went back into the bay to target halibut and bass . “ One trip produced limits of salmon and 9 halibut for 9 anglers , while another trip yielded limits of both salmon and striped bass for 12 anglers .”

San Mateo Coast Salmon Bite Stays Hot

EL GRANADA - Salmon fishing remains epic off of the San Mateo coastline , while bottomfish action continues to be excellent .

The 6 anglers fishing aboard the Que Sera bagged limits of salmon on Saturday , July 7 , according to Sherri Ingles of the Half Moon Bay Sportfishing Center . The 34 anglers aboard the Queen of Hearts landed 340 rockfish , full limits , the same day .

“ The salmon fishing has been absolutely phenomenal ,” emphasized Ingles . “ The boats have been coming back with limits every day .”

Captain Dennis Baxter of the New Captain Pete put his clients onto 23 limits of salmon north of the harbor from Devil ’ s Slide to Thornton Beach on Sunday , July 8 and he said , “ There are a few larger fish which get people ’ s interest , but the majority of salmon are in the 20- to 22-inch range .”

“ There was a good bite south at Martin ’ s Beach at the end of last week , but the water cleared up . Captain Tom Mattusch of the Huli Cat put in 40 fish at Martin ’ s Beach on Thursday , and there has been a good bite inside the buoys out in front of the harbor , but the water has cleared up there as well .,” he said .

“ There are a lot of smaller fish and shakers mixed in with the larger fish , and it is really good to see the number of shakers . The south side is back to the good old days ,” he added .

Monterey Bay

Widow , Vermilion and Copper Rockfish Hit the Deck

MOSS LANDING – Rockfish and lingcod fishing continues to be great , weather permitting , along the Monterey County Coast .

On Sunday , July 8 , the 18 anglers aboard the Kahua fished the inside ledge in Monterey Bay , due to rough weather in the ocean , and landed limits of widow , vermilion and copper rockfish and one lingcod . Most of the anglers used shrimp flies , tipped with squid , to entice the bottomfish , reported Kathy Wilson for Kahuna Sportfishing .
