said, “Many fishermen are ‘crying the
blues’ right not with the lack of overall size.
I know about a 10 pounder landed on a
spinnerbait this past week, and you can
always run into one of these, but with the
lack of wind, the reaction bite has been
much slower.”
“We have been working the outside
weed line with moving water with light
tackle and terminal gear of Berkley’s D
Worms or General with Max Scent. With
the Snag Proof Open arriving soon, the
three-fish limit opens up the tournament.
It is difficult to land five fish on a frog, but
with three fish, you can work a few spots
for success. We expect to have over 200
participants based upon last year, and
it is a very family-oriented event where
participants are happy to reacquaint
themselves with each other,” said Pringle

Summer Trouters Hook Up!
BRIDGEPORT - “Bridgeport Reservoir
fished excellent this past week, not from
the shore but the anglers fishing out of
boats did very well,” reported Jim Reid of
Ken’s Sporting Goods.
“Most of our regular trollers have
switched to bait fishing due to the weed
growth out there lately however, we did talk
to one angler who gave trolling a try out
near Rainbow Point and has some very
good success on several 3 and 4 pounders
as well as a bunch of 1 to 2 pounders, all
these fish were caught trolling crawlers
and Thomas Buoyants. The bait and
fly angling have been awesome in the
Buckeye Bay Area as well as some good
action still in the East Walker channel area
just off the marina. Bait anglers are using
Mice Tails, pinched crawlers, PowerBait
and inflated crawlers. Fly anglers are
using blood midge patterns, soft hackles,
chironomids, ice cream cones and damsel
nymphs,” said Reid.
“We’ve had some very good reports
from Virginia Lakes the last couple days
from anglers fishing night crawlers,
PowerBait and Mice Tails, not too many
big fish lately but some nice fish in the 1
to 3 pound range. Lure anglers are still
using Kastmasters, Thomas Bouyants and
Panther Martins. Fly anglers are doing the
best from tubes or kayaks with matukas,

Tim Boggs of Elkhorn
Bait and Tackle also
reported tough fishing on
opening day. “We went
upriver on the Feather
River all of the way to Beer
Can Beach from Verona,”
said Boggs. “We didn’t see
any fish caught nor did we
see any roll.
The high water
temperature is believed
to be largely responsible
for the slow fishing. “The
water temperature was
72.9 degrees at Beer Can
Beach and 73.12 degrees
on the Sacramento below
Verona. We didn’t weigh in
any fish at the shop,” said
Boggs.
The daily bag limit will
only be one fish and the
possession limit will be
two fish this season. For

twin lakes specials, seal buggers, soft
hackles and zug bugs,” disclosed Reid.
“The East Walker is running at about
207 cfs right now. There has been a lot of
pressure on the river lately and it seems to
have made the fishing a bit tougher. They’re
still taking mainly caddis nymphs and small
midge patterns but with the increased
pressure it’s really important to get your
drifts just right and very near the bottom to
fool these fish,” Reid concluded.
FEATHER RIVER
Salmon Season Opens with
Tough Fishing
YUBA CITY – The salmon season on the
Feather River started with slow fishing on
July 16.
“Bob Bradbury and I caught one 18
pound salmon, lost one and had another
takedown on the Feather River below the
Thermalito Afterbay Outlet on opening
day,” said Reimers of Rustic Rob’s Guide
Service. “We saw
