Lake Camanche slowly continues to drop in elevation . The lake was 228.52 ′ and 88 % full at the time of this report . Lake Camanche ’ s release was approximately 365 cfs while receiving approximately 136 cfs from Pardee

Channel Cats On The Prowl

OREGON HOUSE – Channel catfish , along with black bass and sunfish , offer the most consistent late summer action at Collins Lake during the hot weather . The surface water temperature is 82 degrees and the lake level is 14 feet from full .

Shore fishermen and boaters are hooking the catfish while soaking chicken liver , mackerel and PowerBait in the coves . The best fishing is available in the evening and night hours .

Big catfish honors go to Caleb , who landed a 6-1 / 2 lb . catfish while fishing chicken liver . Isaiah Lopez of Salinas landed a 5 lb . catfish while soaking garlic Power Bait off the boat dock . Robert of Oroville also had a good time when he bagged a 4-1 / 2 lb . catfish while bait fishing .

The bass are in in their summer pattern . Anglers are tossing out top water lures and swimbaits early and late in the day . During the day , fishermen are picking up fish while fishing Senkos and drop shotting with plastic in deep water .

Brady Blum landed a 3-1 / 2 lb . bass while tossing out a Jitterbug . Joe of Yuba City also picked a 3-3 / 4 lb . bass while fishing across from the docks .

A few anglers fishing bait in deep water are catching some rainbows Corey of Hollister reeled in a 5.5 l . lb . trout . Brian Buers of Brownsville caught a 4-1 / 2 lb . trout on Power Bait .

Bluegill and other sunfish are also available to anglers . For example , Brian Akers reeled in a half-pound bluegill .

Channel Cats Go On Night Bite

RIO LINDA – While fishing for many other fish species slows down during the Sacramento Valley heat , the warm weather generally makes catfish action bust loose , especially at night .

That appears to be the case this year on the Sacramento River from Knights Landing to Verona . “ The channel catfish are going crazy right now ,” said Tim Boggs at Elkhorn

Now Fishing Striped Bass on the Sacramento and Feather Rivers Now Booking Spring and Fall Run Salmon on the Klamath River !

Outdoor Sports . “ Your best bet is to fish the Knights Landing area at First Beach from the evening around 6 p . m . through the night .”

“ The fish go up to 11 pounds , but most average around 1-3 / 4 to 2-1 / 4 pounds ,” stated Boggs . “ The top two baits are chicken liver and G & S Dip Bait .”

Anglers targeting catfish in the Knights Landing and Verona areas are also picking up some keeper stripers . “ Local anglers brought in five stripers in the 18 to 22 inch class that they landed while fishing for catfish ,” noted Boggs .

If you ’ re going out fishing in the evenings , make sure you take some mosquito repellant with you , since the mosquitoes have been very abundant this year .

Salmon fishing remains slow from Colusa to Verona , with the water temperature holding around 74.5 degrees . After holding at the mouth of the American , the fish are shooting straight up into the colder water at Red Bluff .

DAVIS LAKE

Catfish Bite Ignites

PORTOLA – While rainbow trout are “ slow and deep ” on Lake Davis with the warm summer weather , the brown bullhead catfish bite is sizzling .

“ Shore anglers are hooking lots of catfish in the 12 to 18 inch range ,” said Jeanne Graham of the J & J Grizzly Country Store and Camping Resort . “ They ’ re catching them all day long while throwing out worms and prepared catfish baits . The top spots are Coot Bay and Mallard Cove .”

Largemouth bass fishing is also going strong . “ Boaters

Anglers aren ’ t catching many trout now , although the few being caught are good-sized , ranging from 20 to 24 inches . Graham recommended trolling at 20 feet deep down the channel with Dick Nite in copper / red head and Needlefish in red dot frog .

Lake Davis is holding 74,688 acre feet of water , 90 percent of capacity and 118 percent of normal .

LAKE DEL VALLE

Trolling Produces Smallmouths , Stripers

LIVERMORE – Al Hurwitz of Saratoga and Jim Wolfe of LAl Hurwitz of Saratoga and Abbey Lev of Sunnyvale had a great time trolling for bass on their latest trolling adventure at Lake Del Valle .

“ We hooked up 11 smallmouth bass and 6 striped bass while trolling both Panther Martin spinners and small jointed Rapalalike minnows ,” said Hurwitz . “ The fish were all caught along the shoreline and in the flats of Swallow Bay . A number were of decent size .”

“ The fish were in a 30 to 35 feet water column about 10 to 20 feet below the surface . We applied a lot of scent to the lures , which seemed to help ,” he noted .

The lake level is still up and the water clarity is improving , according to Hurwitz . The surface water temperature was a toasty 80 degrees .

“ It was warm , but there was a gentle breeze ,” said Hurwitz . “ We saw wonderful bird life , including a young bald eagle . It was overall a great day .”

Catfish are plentiful at Del Valle . The park district planted 750 pounds of channel catfish in the reservoir the week of August 6 . Fish with mackerel , nightcrawlers , chicken livers or other baits for the cats .

Monte Smith of Gold Country Sport Fishing said , “ I took out noted outdoor chef , Hank Shaw , along with regular client Daniel Vasquez this week , and they limited out on both kokanee and rainbow trout . I even put in a kokanee limit which I am smoking today . Shaw has a number of cookbooks out featuring wild game , and he brought some smoked salmon on the boat that was to die for . “

“ I have been running solely kokanee gear of pink or orange micro-hoochies behind a Shasta Tackle Sling Blade along with a few Apex lures . The rainbows are also jumping on the kokanee gear , and we limited out first on kokanee , shaking a number of rainbows ,” Smith said .

“ Then , after limiting on kokanee and targeting rainbows , we shook a number of kokanee . It is very interesting right now since these fish should be at depths from 90 to 100 feet , but they are in the 45- to 60- foot range . The rainbows are also mixed in , and we are even finding rainbows deeper than 60 feet ,” he explained .

“ There are three different grades of kokanee in the lake from small ones around 10 inches , mid-sized fish in the13-inch range , and the largest grade of kokanee to 16 inches . The males are all in good shape with their scales still intact , and the females have fairly well-developed eggs . The lake is in good shape , and we were off of the lake by noon both days with limits of kokanee by 10:00 a . m .,” added Smith .

Then on Smith ’ s next trip , 3 clients caught 15 kokanee ranging from 10 to 16- 1 / 2 inches and 10 rainbows to 17 inches while trolling at 50 feet deep .

“ We trolled with small hoochies and Apex lures behind Vance ’ s and Sling Blade dodgers . The trout are in a feeding frenzy on bait fish , even though the surface water temperature is 81 degrees ,” he added .

Whaleback Fire Threatens Spalding !

SPAULDING - The fishing at Eagle Lake has been fair . The trout have dropped down in the water column where they are feeding on big clouds of tui chubs .

Having said that , fishing is NOT the focus at Eagle Lake at this time . A large wildfire dubbed the Whaleback Fire , has been burning in the forest around Eagle Lake for several days . The fire has made several surges toward the Spalding housing tract and has approached to within 200 yards of structures , but no buildings
