Take Your Pick of Stripers or Perch
SAN FRANCISO- Striped bass and perch continue to be the top targets along the city beaches, while halibut has taken a back seat to salmon fishing.
Angling crowds were beginning to thin out around Baker Beach and Crissy Field this week, according to Stephanie Scott
at Gus’ Discount Bait and Tackle in San Francisco.
“ Lots of good fishing on the boats! They’ re out catching salmon like crazy, and stripers like crazy,” she laughed.
“ But around here, its slowing down for halibut. Check out Ocean Beach and Pacifica. A lot of the guys are down there throwing bucktail jigs for the stripers during the evenings. The mornings are good too but the tides have been better at
night,” she tipped.
“ Perch fishing is good with worms and shrimp. Some of the guys are using an anchovy on one hook and shrimp on another and catching stripers on the anchovies. One guy last week said he caught a perch and striper at
the same time!” – Roland Aspiras

Don’ t Cheap Out!

Way back in the early days of black bass fishing, some bright person came up with the Texas rig for using soft plastic worms.

This self weedless method of rigging worms was( and still is) instrumental in catching boatloads of bass. Originally, a bullet shaped sinker was used to help take the floating worm down to the bottom, but this was

SALTY TIPS by Steve“ Hippo” Lau later modified by having a bead placed between the bullet sinker and the hook.

Noticing that shaking this rig caused the sinker to bang against the bead and resulted in a clicking sound, different materials were experimented with until it was found that a brass sinker bashing against a glass bead caused the loudest and most distinct clicking sound.
Back in the 1970s, I didn’ t have a lot of money, so I resigned myself to using plastic beads, which were, and still are, very much less expensive than glass beads. So, they didn’ t make as much noise as glass beads, I caught my share of bass, and later on, rockfish from shore, so I was happy with using the cheap plastic beads.
Fast forward to the 90s and I found myself with a few more bucks and in pursuit of more different species of fish. I found that the glass beads became an advantage not only for its sound producing qualities, but also because they are vastly more sparkly. This eye catching feature was my little secret advantage when going for
stripers, salmon, and rockfish. The problem is glass beads were, and still are, much more expensive than plastic beads.
There are no beads finer than Czech fire polished beads for fishing use. Fire polishing“ heat polishes” the hole so that they are smooth and non-abrasive to your line. I believe that is why these beads are so expensive.
Now, in the last few years, having expressed my preference for glass beads to a number of people, I have been hearing of few people having their lines breaking more often than appreciated. This is a situation that shouldn’ t be since modern lines have been improved and are better than ever. But, like any good detective, I had to ask a lot of questions and figure out what was going on.
The one common denominator boiled down to this; they were all using glass beads that weren’ t fire polished. In a way, I don’ t blame them. Walk into a craft store like Michael’ s or Jo-Ann’ s and there they are... beautiful, sparkly, faceted glass beads for something like $ 3-4 for two to three dozen beads. I mean, at that price, how can one resist, right?
But take one of those cheaper beads, run your line through it, then rub it up and down the line under pressure. I guarantee in most cases, the line would fray and weaken in only a few passes.
When it comes to glass beads, don’ t cheap out. Get the good stuff.
