Rockfish regulations will change on August 25th through December 31st with the take prohibited seaward of the 40-fathom depth contour( 240 feet) due to the quota of incidental take of yelloweye rockfish being exceeded. Recreational Dungeness crab season opens on November 3rd, and the Huli Cat is the only large party boat running the popular crab / rockfish combinations.

A wave of salmon did move through, and the party boats found limits off of Martin’ s Beach, but the bite slowed down once again, leaving captains hoping for another wave of the Coastside fish.

The commercial salmon fleet has been working in deeper water for a‘ pick’ level of action. The Coastside Fishing Club salmon plants haven’ t shown up in the harbor as of yet, but they normally start arriving around September.

The Queen of Hearts, Riptide, and Que Sera Sera have returned with limits of rockfish and the occasional lingcod on each trip within the past week, according to Half Moon By Sportfishing.

Captain Smitty on the Riptide was the highliner with 5 lings along with 19 limits of rockfish on August 18th. A recent trip by the Queen of Hearts also produced 40 rockfish and19 Lingcod to 12 pounds.

Captain Dennis Baxter of the New Captain Pete said,“ We started out on a salmon trip on August 19th, but after finding no action, we switched over for 23 limits of rockfish at the Deep Reef.”

“ I was out on a bird watching trip to the Pioneer Canyon area on Saturday, and we observed Buller’ s shearwaters which normally hang out around the albacore schools. We haven’ t seen them for a few years in our waters, and we also saw Pacific sauries jumping. The black cod boats fishing past the Farallons have also seen bluefin tuna jumping, so stayed tuned!” he stated.

“ Down the coast fishing is heating up with fall weather coming up,” said Carol Jones of Kahuna Sportfishing.“ Regular Steve Wilson came up with double lingcod, including a 25 pounder and a 20 pounder!”

The total fish count was 13 canary rockfish, 18 copper rockfish, 22 lingcod, 28 assorted rockfish and 51 vermilion rockfish for 11 anglers.

On the next trip to Point Sur on August 18, the 22 anglers landed 1 cabezon weighing 9 pounds, 7 canary rockfish, 55 copper rockfish, 44 lingcod to 20 pounds, 14 assorted rockfish and 143 vermilion rockfish up to 7 pounds.

A full day trip to Point Lopez aboard the Kahuna yielded 60 copper rockfish, 40 lingcod, 40 assorted rockfish, 100 vermilion rockfish for 20 anglers.

Anglers are also bagging good numbers of rockfish and lingcod inside Monterey Bay and up the Santa Cruz County Coast.

19.“ There were some decent scores of halibut caught near Capitola and the Cement Ship. The wind stayed down all morning and it is calm up the coast. There are some rumors of big bluefin being spotted near the canyons in front of Half Moon Bay.”

On the previous day, Fraser reported albacore were caught in the offshore waters.

“ The anglers caught their fish at 35’ 55 / 123’ 03,” said Fraser.“ There were some scores of 1-3 fish that I heard. The anglers did not find the fish until noon so they may have missed the morning bite. The weather is flat calm but there is some south swell.”
