12 Nov 23 - Dec 7, 2018 FRESHWATER VOL.37 • ISS. 25 FRESHWATER REPORTS: CONTINUED FROM PG 7 mixed in. Tbe 5 mph speed limit has gone into effect throughout the entire lake, now that the lake level is below 400 feet above sea level .Hobie Cove at Brown’s Ravine is the only ramp currently open. When the lake goes down to 396 feet in elevation, the low water ramp at Granite Bay will become operational, according to Ken Christianson at the Folsom Lake Marina. Trout and salmon reports at Folsom have been very scarce lately. As water temperatures cool, you can expect the rainbow trout and king salmon bite to perk up on Folsom. When the reservoir undergoes its annual fall turn over, shore fishing can be as good or even better than fishing from a boat as the fish move into the shallows to feed. DON PEDRO RESERVOIR Bass Fishermen Target Deep Water with Drop Shot Rigs LA GRANGE - Bass fishing continues to be best by fishing over underwater humps close to the bottom. Most bass guys that are fishing the 30 to 50 foot range have been having the best luck while using plastics on the drop-shot rig. On a recent weekend was a Gold Country Junior Bass Tournament that was held at the lake with most kids weighing in three to five keepers with the winning weight of over 12 pounds. Trout fishermen can also expect to catch bass this time of year as the lake is loaded with shad and trolling spoons that imitate small shad will catch bass. Trout fishing is picking up with the cooler temperatures ahead and will continue to improve, find the bait and you will find the fish as they can expect to catch trout at the 40 to 60 foot range. Troll small spoons and Apex lures that imitate bait fish will get the job done. The water temps are at the 65 degree range and will continue to drop. The lake has dropped to just under 70 percent level. All ramps on the lake are open for launching. EAGLE LAKE It’s Trophy Trout Time! EASTERN SIERRA Warm Weather and Slow Fishing Mark Final Week of Trout Season were a few fish starting to be caught from the shore down at the North end of the lake but by no means was it red hot. The trolling had been fair with some nice 1 to 2 pound browns as well as some 1 to 3 pound rainbows making a showing. There were a few fish in the 5 and 6 pound range coming in but most were in the 1 to 3 pound class. Bait fishing from boats was also fair with anglers reporting having some success with pinched crawlers, inflated crawlers and PowerBait.” “Like Bridgeport the Twins were a little tough during the last week, but there were some fish being caught. There had been some success bait fishing, but trollers working deep water did the best,” said Reid. While most trout fishing destinations are closed in the Eastern Sierra, catch and release stream fishing is available on the Lower Owens River and Hot Creek. As of press time the fishing on these waters was good with plenty of dry fly action available. Upper Klamath Upstream of Interstate 5 Reopens to Adult Chinook Take KLAMATH GLEN – The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (CDFW) Iron Gate Hatchery has taken in more than 8,000 fall Chinook Salmon According to California 2018-19 supplemental sport fishing regulations, the take of 8,000 fall Chinook Salmon at the hatchery triggers the reopening of the recreational Chinook Salmon fishery between Interstate 5, near Hornbrook, and 3,500 feet below the hatchery. Recreational anglers will be able to harvest two Chinook Salmon, but no more than one adult greater than 22 inches, per day in this reach. The possession limit is six Chinook Salmon with no more than three adults. Reopening this stretch of the Klamath River is designed to allow anglers to catch surplus hatchery Chinook Salmon now that the number of adult needed for spawning has been achieved at the hatchery. The lower Trinity River downstream of Hawkins Bar is the other section within the Klamath basin that remains open to the take of adult Chinook Salmon. All other quota areas are closed to the take of adult Chinook Salmon. The take of jack Chinook Salmon, CONTINUED ON PG 13 BRIDGEPORT- “Bridgeport Reservoir was a bit hit and miss as the season closed, there were some good days as well as some not so good days,” reported Jim Reid of Ken’s Sporting Goods. “There The KFBK OUTDOOR SHOW 3507 1 Rated with your Outdoor Radio Show host for 26 years! # Bob Simms Fishing • Hunting • Destinations Conservation • History Dedicated to the Northern California Outdoorsman FOLSOM LAKE captain JAMES NETZEL Bass Fishing Plummets with Lake Level SACRAMENTO – The water level at Folsom Lake has been dropping rapidly – and the previously hot spoon bite for bass has plummeted with it. “The bass fishing was really good before the water began going down,” said Alan Fong of Fisherman’s Warehouse. “Anglers were just killing them while using Blade Runner spoons at 25 to 40 feet deep.” The majority of fish were spots and smallmouths in the 1-1/2 to 4 lb. range, with some largemouths SPALDING- “The fall fishing at Eagle Lake has been fantastic, with some of the best yet to come,” reported Captain Bryan Roccucci of Big Daddy’s Guide Service. “The fish have been shallow for about a month now, and are aggressively feeding and whacking our baits.” “While Eagle Lake is open to fishing from Memorial Day weekend to December 31st, people know that late fall is prime time to get in on some of the best Eagle Lake has to offer. We have been fishing multiple locations around the lake while working our Jay Fair flies on custom fly trolling setups that put our flies in the right spot with the right action to entice these big hot rainbows to crush them,” exclaimed Roccucci. Just about everyone fishing Eagle at this time is scoring limits. Trollers are working a variety of areas in the south end of the lake with flies, orange or frog pattern spoons, threaded worms, grubs and Rapalas.
