SALTWATER REPORTS
BERKELEY BODEGA BAY
BERKELEY - Anglers departing from
East Bay ports are nailing full limits of
crabs and rockfish. While boats have not
been limiting on lingcod, there are some
good lings up for grabs and anglers that
concentrate on working the bottom with
big baits are scoring two fish limits on
most trips.
“We fished the islands today,” reported
Captain James Smith of California Dawn
Sportfishing. “The weather has been
flat for the past couple days and we’ve
been pulling full limits of both crabs and
rockfish. The lingcod action is not red hot,
but it’s still very productive with top fish
approaching 20 pounds.”
“The fall action is pretty darn good,”
reported Captain Chris Smith of Happy
Hooker Sportfishing. “We had another
spectacular trip today. Our anglers took
home 31 limits of big rockfish and we
picked up 310 crabs on the way in. That
totaled up to 10 rockfish and 10 crabs per
angler. That’s a lot of great eating.”
If you decide to head out on a combo
trip, shrimp flies are the ticket for rounding
up a limit of rockfish. If you want to focus
on lingcod, mooching large frozen baits 3
to 5 feet off the bottom is the way to go. BODEGA BAY – The Dungeness crab
opener began at midnight on November
3rd, and the action has been hot and
heavy since the opening set. Heavy
pressure in the close location of the
Estero have led to fewer and fewer crab
in the pots since the opener, but the deep
water locations have been kicking out full
pots of commercial grade crab for party
boats and six-packs.
The weather was on the rough side on
the opening weekend, but the second
week has brought flat calm conditions,
allowing private boaters to access more
productive crab grounds further north.
Captain Rick Powers of Bodega Bay
Sport Fishing and the 65-foot New Sea
Angler said, “The weather conditions
have been good the past two days and
everyone is loading up on limits of crabs.
We were back in the harbor by 1:30 on
Friday, November 9th, with 44 limits of
crabs, 44 limits of rockfish and 6 lings to
10 pounds.
Captain Eric Holthouse of North Bay
Charters said, “Second captain Josh
Stevens has been running the boat the
past week, and between him and Captain
Merlin Kolb, they have been scoring
limits of lings, quality rockfish, and limits
of commercial-
grade crab with
a few jumbos in
the pots. We have
relocated our
gear to deeper
water as the
Estero has been
mostly fished
out.”

been slow for Dungeness crab although a
few fishermen are picking up near-limits to
limits. It is possible to do well in the bay,
but it is unlikely. Ten Mile Beach has been
the top area for crab, and the Outer Bay
still has some good ground left.”

November 10, landed 26 limits of rockfish
(260), 4 lingcod and 260 crab, reported
Captain Erik Anfinson. The anglers drifted
live bait or fished shrimp flies and bars for
the rockfish and lingcod.
Sunday’s trip on the Bass Tub also
yielded superb fishing at the Farallon
Islands. “We were blessed with flat glassy
weather and ended the day with 30 limits
of rockfish (300) of a nice variety and size,
10 lingcod to 16 pounds and 300 crab. We
still have room still available for our crab
rockfish combos,” said Anfinson.
