FRESHWATER VOL.37 • ISS. 25 9 Nov 23 - Dec 7, 2018 FRESHWATER REPORTS: CONTINUED FROM PG 4 LAKE CAMANCHE 22 to 23 inches long.” Graham said trollers are experiencing the top action while trolling with Dick Nites in the copper, red frog and firetiger patterns at 6 feet deep in the lake’s upper end. “Bank guys are experiencing the best action while tossing out worms and PowerBait,” he noted. “Mallard and Honker bay are the top spots.” “Fly fishermen are doing best on rainbow trout while fishing black ant and brown wiggletail patterns in the Fairview and Bluff cove areas,” he tipped. With the colder water temperatures, Graham hasn’t heard of any bass or brown bullhead catfish caught by anglers lately. Davis Lake is 80 percent of capacity. The boat ramps remain in the water, though the docks have been pulled out. - Dan Bacher cont. North and South Shore launch ramps. The annual Informative Fisherman’s IF-Mas is coming to the South Shore on December 1st, and Lake Camanche is offering two nights for the price of one during the event. With the recent trout plants, shore anglers have been picking up rainbows to 4 pounds around the North Shore launch ramp using chartreuse Power Eggs on a three-foot leader, and with the trout plants continuing, the shore action at the pond along with both sides of the lake will improve. Trollers are waiting for colder water temperatures along with the planted rainbows migrating towards the dam area. Normally, the Narrows and the river arm near the Lancha Plana Bridge are the best early season locations for trolling. The annual IF-Mas event will feature free derbies starting at 7:30 a.m. with the weigh ins for best five trout and bass at 2:30 p.m. A party, dinner, seminars, and casting contest will begin at 4:00 p.m. in the hall, and the dinner is offered for $15. The annual event is free for the fishing derby, and there will be a number of vendors present. Lake Camanche Recreation Company is also promoting ‘Campground for a Cause’ throughout November and until December 20. A donation of non-perishable foods or a new unwrapped toy will result in a free night of camping or cottage stay for one paid night. Information available at 866- 763-5121. Find the schools of shad - find the crappie and bass. “On my last bass trip on Clear Lake, I caught and released five crappie in the 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 pounds while throwing out a Lucky Craft LV500 lure,” said Dave Burruss of Clear Lake Outdoors. “I had about 20 hits that I missed because I was using a big bait. If I had used smaller swimbaits, I probably would have experienced non-stop crappie action.” Shag Rock, Henderson Point and other spots are among the better spots to nail crappie. Burruss has been averaging 10 to 15 bass on his latest bass fishing adventures. “I’ve been hooking fish on Lucky Craft LV 500 lures, small Kaitech lures and creature baits in anywhere from 2 to • Trout • Bass • Crappie • Bluegill • Catfish Fall Trout Plants Boost Shore Fishing! OREGON HOUSE - Fall trout planting program is off to a successful start with two private plants totaling 3,000 pounds in the last week. Both plants included trophy trout! As the surface temperature continues to drop we’re seeing trout surfacing just about all day long. Even with the visible surface activity it can be challenging get them to bite, but it’s almost never a terrible idea to cast where the fish are feeding. Mike Wills told us they were watching the water swirl all around so his wife cast a Needlefish and hooked a four pound trout right up top (Not pictured); Not conventional for our lake but different strategies for different seasons. I’ve heard of several catches trolling down around 30ft but there is abundant evidence that the bite is moving up. For one thing we’re actually seeing a good number of shore catches. Dennis, Tanya, Tiffany & Matt hooked a nice rainbow on a worms, right out in front of camp #52. Jack Eaton was shore fishing with rainbow PowerBait when he reeled in his 3 1/2 pounder. Steve Long did the LAKE DAVIS Trollers, Bank Anglers Battle Quality Rainbows PORTOLA – Trollers, bank fishermen using bait and fly fishing enthusiasts are hooking big numbers of quality rainbow trout at Lake Davis. “The fishing is almost excellent,” quipped Jim Graham at J&J Grizzly Store and Campround Resort. “Trollers are catching limits, while bank anglers are bagging an average of 3 to 4 fish per rod and some are catching Now Catching limits. And kids fishing out by the dam didn’t come up empty handed either. Andrew & Joey made their catch on a salmon egg and Jael caught his rainbow trout on yellow PowerBait. Trout have finally over-taken catfish. It’s normal since, as people get excited about trout plants, that’s mostly what they’re fishing for. But catfish are hungry all year round so even if you’re dropping pink PowerBait from the shore you might do like JR Lozano from Woodland did out in front of camp #202, and pull up an 8 1/2 pound silver beast of a cat. With 3000 pounds of trout already in, another 2000 pounds going in next week, and weekly plants to follow I expect trout are going to dominate for the next month. - Ed at Collins Lake LIVERMORE - The water level at Lake Del Valle has dropped immensely over the past couple of weeks, changing the dynamic of the lake and how to fish it. The water temperature continues to drop as well, dropping to between 62 and 63 degrees at press time. “The trout fishing has picked up quite a bit, with the Mouse Tails being the dominant bait,” said Captain Jacob of the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company. “Many anglers are catching the trout from the shore on the east beach or in the coves in Swallow Bay. Boaters are trolling or casting small jerkbaits, particularly in the hot pink color. Garlic and red, white and blue PowerBait has produced rainbows as well.” Jacob rated the bass fishing as “red hot” now. Bait anglers are using nightcrawlers while lure fishermen are employing 2 to 3 inch swimbaits or Senkos. If the fishing is slow, he recommended trolling Panther Martins in 1/8 oz. or smaller about 2 to 3 miles per hour. “Striped bass fishing has really slowed down,” he stated. “Anchovies are the only thing they are biting consistently on. Drifting or still fishing on the bottom in deep water is the best way to fish your baits.” “The catfish continue to hit sardines or anchovies,” Jacob tipped. “They like to hold in big reed patches or feed in the muddier water of the lake.” For bluegill and other sunfish, use red worms or mini crawlers in the weeds or trees.
