Halibut Fishing Highlights
Recent Action
EAST BAY- Halibut scores are
ranging from very good to fantastic
depending on the day and there have
been some quality stripers mixed in.
Salmon fishing has been decent some
days and very good on other days.
The Happy Hooker with Captain
Jonathan Smith at the wheel has
been smacking a lot of halibut outside
the Golden Gate while working the
bars and coastal beaches.
For example, on the Hooker’s last
live bait potluck trip they boated 47
halibut and 8 bass for 28 anglers.
Average size halibut are going 8
to 10 pounds, while the largest fish
weight 30 plus pounds.
Captain Quang of Goldeneye 2000
Sportfishing has been putting his
anglers on fantastic halibut fishing
in recent days. On slow days, his
anglers are averaging 2 halibut
per rod. On the best days, they are
scoring limits.
The New Easy Rider with Captain
Joey Gallia at the helm has been
focused on salmon trolling. The
scores have ranged from full limits
to about a fish per rod on the slower
days.
The kings average about 10 pounds
and range up into the middle 20’s.
Captain Hayden Mullins of Dragon
Sportfishing has been fishing out of
the Emeryville Marina and is mixing
things up.
Some days Hayden fishes kings,
other days he fishes halibut, but the
results are consistently the same….
Limits!
Hayden will be in Emeryville for
another month or so and then he’ll
head back up to Pittsburg for sturgeon
and the outlook is outstanding for an
exciting early fall bite.

in the box. The story is the size of
the salmon, and we had them to 26
pound dressed with the average
size over 15 pounds. We are finding
salmon in the low twenties s on a
daily basis, and it is only a ½ hour run
to the fish between Tomales Bay and
Bodega Head. Kayakers are getting
them. “
“Rockfishing has also been on a tear
and we put in limits of rockfish and 19
lings on a recent trip,” said Powers.
Captain Merlin Kolb of Mike
Aughney’s Reel Magic went salmon
trolling on his latest trip but switched
over to rockfishing for 7 limits plus a
few lings. They also landed a bonus
27-pound halibut while trolling for
salmon with
Kolb’s favorite
blue hoochie.
The halibut bite
is very good in
Tomales Bay.
