I was hanging out on the starboard side of the Pacific Dream, near the live bait tank chatting with anglers. One second nothing was going on and then things got exciting, transitioning quickly to downright chaotic. First an angler on the portside got a bite. Well actually it was more than just a bite. His anchovy, hanging about 30 feet below the boat got mauled. The rod doubled over in the holder and you could tell just from the look of the bouncing rod that he was hooked up, except he wasn’t. $@#&% Circle Hooks! Right then a rod in the starboard corner went off and that bite resulted in a solid hookup. The fish surged away tearing off line and you could tell it was a husky salmon. A beat later Captain Chris Smith was at the angler’s side net in hand coaching him through the fight. While that fight was still going on, a dozen feet up the starboard rail or so, Bill Groome’s bait got smash and he was into a fish that acted like it was huge. Bill’s rod bucked and a steady stream of line sizzled off the reel! With one net in Chris’s hands, the other net on the bow and both deckhands shadowing Bill, something told me I should run up front and grab the second net. I’d just snatch the net out of the holder and was starting back down the starboard side, when Bill’s fish did a 180 and surged toward the boat. I kicked it into high gear and ran down the rail handing the net off to deckhand Joey Smith. Just as I did Bill’s fish boiled to the surface, but it wasn’t a salmon. It was a handsome thresher shark. Joey made the scoop and just like that the 15-pound salmon Chris had netted and Bill’s 25-pound GONE FISHING by Cal Kellogg D Brock with an opportunity to secure a Sponsored Duckworth boat, Cal didn’t have to think twice to put the deal together. It didn’t take long to schedule a meeting with the folks at Gone Fishin’ Marine to work out the design and details for an incredible fishing platform built to Cal’s specifications. A couple months later, the most gorgeous and capable aluminum boat in California arrived, eager and ready to fish anywhere from the Bay to the Sierras. Rigged Cal and Wes are co-captains of the Fish Sniffer’s 2020 Duckworth. This will to the ensure that the boat gets a maximum amount of time on the water. Photo by MARK BLANTON, Gone Fishin’ Marine. Built to the highest construction and performance standards, Duckworth has a legendary reputation for quality. When Cal received the call from NorCal Guide and Fish Sniffer Friend Kevin 37 Years Serving Sportsmen hilt by Gone Fishin’ Marine, the 2020 Duckworth 18 Advantage Sport has all the bells and whistles. This boat is AWESOME! Built on the long- proven Advantage platform, the New Sport model is a lighter, nimbler version of its big brother without compromising stability or perfor- mance. At 18’3” long and 86” wide, the Advantage Sport is a well-de- signed, fishing playground with plenty of room for a full crew and gear. The hull has 12 degrees of deadrise at the stern that steps to 24 degrees forward allowing the boat to remain extremely stable even when cutting thru the worst conditions on the water. Powered by a Yamaha 90HP outboard, WHAT’S HOT by Wes Ward There isn’t a trout lake in California where you can’t catch trout on plastic curly grubs at least part of the time. They work well in lakes like Davis where trout feed heavily on insects. Yet they also work great on lakes like Folsom and Shasta where baitfish are the prey. The most useful grubs for trout trollers are models that range from 1 to 3 inches in length. Grub trolling is often done at slow speeds, say from 1 to 1.5 mph, but when using larger grubs or trolling lakes that feature baitfish like shad or smelt don’t be afraid to bump the speed up to as high as 2.5. - Cal Kellogg CONTINUED ON PG 18 TROUT & KOKANEE JOURNAL..........................8-13 BAJA ROUNDUP......................................................31 BULLETIN BOARD.....................................................3 CATCH & RELEASE - FLY FISHING: Alex Cady.........7 FISH SNIFFER COUNTRY: Dave Hurley..................28 GO FOR IT: Staff.........................................................2 HOW-TO: Cal Kellogg................................................6 KAYAK FISHING SPOTLIGHT: Kevin Hofer ...............5 MAP FEATURE: Dan Bacher...............................16-17 MIXED BAG FISHING: Ernie Marlan........................24 SPOTLIGHT ON CONSERVATION: Dan Bacher......26 STAFF TACKLE What We’re Using Cal Kellogg - fished the Middle Fork of the American River for rainbow trout. Paul Kneeland - fished Eagle Lake with Bridget Looney in the Fish Sniffer Rogue Jet 21’ Coastal. They caught rainbow trout to 20 inches and 3.2 pounds, using a Daiwa DXS 8’ light action IM-7 graphite trigger stick rigged with a Daiwa Lexa 100 Line counter reel loaded with 8 lb test Yozuri Topknot line. They trolled bright orange and red dot frog Speedy Shiners with Pro Cure Trophy Trout scent off the Canon Downriggers at 25 feet deep at 2.5 mph.
