and bright. Rob had been out on a regular basis since the first week of August,
frequently producing a fish or two per trip.
Rob told me the season was getting off to a slower start compared to last year
because of the hot weather in the valley. Another interesting point Rob brought
up was he believes the moon phase has a lot to do with the number of fish in the
area. He thinks that the fish move on the full moons. The last full moon was on
August 15th, which means more fish should be here soon. The full moon on July
16th, happened to be on the salmon opener, which was too early in the season for
a big group of fish to move in.
Once the weather cools down, the fish will start to move into the rivers and
fishing will get better quickly. It could be tough fishing one day and the next
could be the start of an epic season.
On the day Rob and I went out, we fished the Thermalito Outlet. The water
temperature ranged from 62-64 degrees
and was expected to stay in that range.

Salmon fishing on the rivers is expected to bust wide open in the next few
weeks. Salmon fishing has been great on the ocean just outside the Golden
Gate. Often times producing limits or close to limits for most boats as well
as some jumbo fish. All of this activity on the ocean along with the great
forecast of fish returning to the rivers this year, should get you excited about
getting on the river and experiencing some of the best fishing in recent years.
I haven’t been this excited about salmon fishing for years but I think it is
going to be epic!
I was able to get out on the water for an early morning boat trip with Rob
Reimers of Rustic Rob’s Guide Service. We knew going in to this morning,
that fishing would be tough because the temperatures had been hot and it
was early in the season. However, to us avid fishermen, it was worth a shot
knowing that if we catch a fish at this time of year, the fish would be fresh
