Expect the trout fishing to improve when autumn rainbow trout plants begin. The catfish are hitting anchovies and chicken liver in the South Cove, Cowboy Cove and Oak Point. The latest plant of 1000 pounds of channel catfish went into the lake on August 27. Both legal-sized stripers and undersize fish continue to be caught at Los Vaqueros.. Cut anchovies, shad and chicken livers are the baits of choice, either fished from shore or a boat. Cowboy Cove and Howden Cove are the hot spots. The Catch A Special Thrill (C.A.S.T.) for Kids event will take place at Vaqueros Reservoir on October 5, 2019. It’s a free fishing event that pairs students with special needs and their families with local volunteer fishing experts for a day of boat or shore-fishing, a BBQ, awards, and freebies like fishing roe and other goodies for the students!. The black bass bite on New Melones is also tough. Randy Pringle, the Fishing Instructor, was on New Melones this week, and he said, “The bite was not as good as I hoped it would be as the lake is dropping and the fish are suspending. We found our best action with the small Opti Shad on a drop-shot rig alogn with the Splittail Flatnose Minnow with Max Scent. Dark colors worked best in the morning with lighter plastics in the afternoons as the shad are starting to ball up.” The Annual Glory Hole Catfish Contest began accepting registrations on September first for the month-long contest held from October 1 through October 31. The entry and insurance fees total $15.00, and the contest has a limited entry. Three fish can be weighed in, and the first catfish over 12 pounds will take the Big Cat side pot. OROVILLE – The Tuesday night series at the Thermalito Afterbay ended with the biggest largemouth bass of the summer. Harley Matney Sr. caught a giant largemouth measuring 24” and weighing almost 8 pounds. Ryan Friend took second place with a nice 19 1/4” fish, according to Jamey Sorensen at North Valley Tackle and Pro Shop. Boaters continue to nail limits of landlocked king salmon at Oroville. “Two of my customers landed 10 salmon averaging 16 to 17 inches long on their latest trolling adventure at Oroville,” said Craig Newton at Willfish Bait and Tackle in Auburn. “They pulled glow hoochies, tipped with white corn,, behind dodgers. They trolled from Bidwell Point to the dam and also by the Bidwell Canyon Bridge at 45 to 55 feet deep,” said Newton. The Department of Water Resources’ recently reopened the Spillway Boat Ramp area on Lake Oroville three days per week. From now on, the Spillway Boat Ramp area will be open to the public Friday through Sunday from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Boat Ramp area will remain closed Monday through Thursday as construction activities continue. The Spillway Boat Ramp is the largest boat ramp facility at Lake Oroville with two stages of multi-lane boat ramps and a total of 20 launch lanes depending on lake levels. DWR has repaved the parking lot and portions of the boat ramp lanes to increase access. The area also includes the trailhead to a network of multi-use trails for hikers, bikers and equestrians. Lake Oroville is holding 2,734,465 acre feet of water, 77 percent of capacity and 115 percent of average. The lake level is 844.44 in elevation. - Dan Bacher IONE - Lake Pardee is known best for its rainbow trout, kokanee salmon, largemouth bass and smallmouth fishing, but the lake kicks out quality catfish every year. Just ask John Beogovich, who caught an 11-1/4 pound catfish while bait fishing from Blue Herron Point. Lake Pardee is the only Mother Lode reservoir currently stocking rainbow trout, due to the cooler water coming out of the upper Mokelumne River watershed. Mount Lassen Fish Hatchery is planting 1000 pounds of rainbows 1- to 3-pound range every week. A total of 39,000 pounds of rainbows have been planted in the reservoir since February. If you want to hook rainbows, fish in the deep water of the main recreation area off Rainbow Point or the Brush Pile. Toss out nightcrawlers, PowerBait, Kastmasters, Panther Martins and Little Cleos from shore or troll with nightcrawlers, Apex lures, hoochies and other lures behind flashers or dodgers. Pardee will close for the winter from November 3, 2019 to February 13, 2020. Although the date has not been announced yet, the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company will make a plant of channel catfish before the November closure date. REDDING/RED BLUFF Solid Numbers Of Salmon Hooked! REDDING-The salmon run is hitting its fall stride for anglers working from Woodson Bridge up river to Anderson. Anglers have been hooking limits and near limits of fish and the kings being landed are big. “We had a shot of rain last night, but it sure didn’t change the salmon bite,” related Mike Bogue of Mike Bogue’s Guide Service. “We hooked up several fish today, losing some and landed some. It’s been good. We are seeing lots of big CONTINUED ON PG 22 visit LAKE CAMANCHE World-Class Trout & Bass Fishing, year round! 2 for 1 CAMPING Mid Week Camping Special! Your 2nd Night is FREE!
