their “secret spot” while using anchovies..
Catfish are biting chicken liver,
anchovies and worms in various places.
The bite seems to be active across from
the boat launch.
“With the weather starting to cool down,
we will start planting trout as soon as
the water temperature dips below 70
degrees,” said Shoemaker.
“For all of you carp anglers, I am being
told the bite is active once again.” stated
Schoemaker. “The crappie are also hitting
worms fished funder a bobber or crappie
jigs in Graveyard Cove. Bass are being
caught by trollers in Scow Canyon.”
The lake level is 300.8 feet in elevation
and the surface water temperature is 73.9
degrees.
SHASTA LAKE
Bass Bite Well, Trout Action
Fair At Shasta
REDDING - Shasta is currently in
transition from summer to fall conditions.
The trout are scattered, full of forage and
playing hard to get overall. Bass action
remains steady for anglers working the
main body and the lower reaches of the
lake’s arms.
Historically September and May are the
two toughest months on Shasta for trout,
simply because the fish are scattered and
it’s tough to establish a pattern.
If you are looking for trout, trust your
sonar, stay on the move and pound the
fish with shad pattern lures. Start off fast
and then slow down if you have to. Look
for trout holding 60 to 100 feet deep, but
if you see shallower marks work them
because the rainbows will be coming out
of the depths soon.
Bass anglers are scoring with a variety
of different approaches. There has been
fair to good topwater action early in the
morning for spots and largemouths in the
1 to 3-pound range.
Working walking baits and poppers
parallel along points adjacent to deep
water has been the key. The fish are
holding in open water and an offering that
they can pin against the structure triggers
strikes.
When the surface action backs off,
crankbaits and small swimbaits draw

strikes in the same areas.

with Mother’s Finest Worms or jigging

Lake Shasta is currently 35 feet from
maximum pool. Boat launching remains in
full operation at locations around the lake.
trip to Donner,” said Craig Newton at
Willfish Bait and Tackle. “They trolled with
nightcrawlers behind 6 dodgers off the

TAHOE
Mack Bite Solid, Kokanee
Available Too!
DONNER/STAMPEDE
LAKES
Mackinaws Hitting at Donner
TRUCKEE – The kokanee salmon
season has ended at Stampede
Reservoir as the fish transition into their
spawning pattern, but there other fishing
opportunities in the Truckee Basin,
including mackinaw angling at Donner
Lake.
At the end of the season, trollers at
Stampede were bagging quality kokanee
in the 14 to 17 inch range while using
hoochies, spinners and other lures, tipped
with white corn, behind dodgers.
Donner Lake is producing some decent
numbers of mackinaws for trollers. “Three
customers reported landing their limits
of mackinaw to 5 pounds on a recent
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - There are still
kokanee available at Lake Tahoe, but
most anglers are now targeting macks.
The lake trout bite is good with most
anglers getting limits most days. The
average fish goes about 3 pounds.
There has been the occasional 3 to
6-pound rainbow showing in the catches,
but the action isn’t consistent enough
to target them. Instead they are coming
incidentally for anglers working shallow to
moderately deep areas for macks.
Crowds have gotten lighter in the wake
of Labor Day. Private boaters that have
traveled to the lake are scoring a few
fish while pulling plugs along shoreline
structure, but they are not doing as well
as anglers working deep. In a few more
weeks when the surface temperature
comes down, shallow trolling will be a lot
more productive.

WEST DELTA
Stripers Flow In As More
Salmon Show
BRANNAN ISLAND - While stripers
are offering the best action these days,
there has been a lot of talk about salmon
trolling. The salmon bite has ramped
up and several fish per day are now
being landed by trollers working the Old
Sacramento River.
The salmon are averaging around 12
pounds and 25 pounders have been
reported. Spinners have been the best
offering for trolling at this time, but Flatfish
have been accounting for a few fish too.
With cooling water the salmon action
should continue to improve.
Captain David Hammond of Delta Pro
Fishing has been putting his clients on
limits of quality stripers every day while
trolling. Hammond has been relying on
Yo-Zuri deep running Crystal Minnows for
most of his fish.
Pluggers are scoring consistently while
working water in the 3 to 6 foot depth
range with Fish Traps and Rat-L-Traps.
There hasn’t been a lot of topwater action
reported as of yet.
Bait soakers are hooking stripers on
chicken livers and sardine baits, but
weeds continue to be a major issue for
bait anglers at this time.
Sturgeon are holding in the
deepwater areas of upper
Suisun Bay, but few
anglers are willing to battle
the wind to target them. If
you go top baits to try
are salmon roe and
lamprey eel.
