FEATHER RIVER
Salmon Fishing Was Good
Until Drop in Flows
OROVILLE – Chinook salmon fishing
was good on the Feather River until the
Department of Water Resources began
reducing flows below Oroville Dam.
Releases from the dam were 5,450 cfs
and dropping.
“On my latest trip, we he hooked four
salmon, landing three fish weighing 18,
12 and 8 pounds, while fishing with Brad’s
Killer Fish in the Yuba City area,” said Rob
Reimers of Rustic Rob’s Guide Service,
“On the previous trip, we also bagged
three Chinooks while fishing in the same
area.”
Reimers is now targeting salmon in the
Sacramento River in the metropolitan
area.
Tiim Boggs of Elkhorn Outdoor Sports in
Rio Linda reported that the salmon fishing
on the Feather River was tapering off at
press time as the flows were going down.
“On my last trip on the Feather at Beer
Can Beach, the one angler fishing with
me, Greg Clay of Carmichael, hooked
three fish, landing one 29 lb. king,” said
Boggs. “We hooked the one he caught
while drifting roe and lost the two other
fish while trolling with Silvertron spinners.
We saw a ton of salmon in the area that
we fished.”
Boggs is also now targeting Chinooks

while bank fishermen should toss out
PowerBait, minnows and nightcrawlers for
trout and salmon.
The bass fishing at Folsom Lake should
also transition into its fall pattern as the
weather and surface water temperature
cools down.
Don Paganelli of Paganelli’s Bass
Fishing Experience made a short
afternoon trip that produced a total of 12
bass for him and his cousin on Folsom.
The two anglers caught and released a
mixture of largemouth and spotted bass
ranging from 1-1/2 to 2 pounds.
“We used drop shot rigs with Robo
Worms in the Aaron’s Magic and Morning
Dawn colors at 25 feet deep in the main
body of the lake,” advised Paganelli.
“It won’t be long before the fish start
getting ready for the winter by feeding on
threadfin shad and pond smelt,” added
Paganelli. “There aren’t a lot of boaters
on the lake at this time. The bite could
fire up at any time. When it does, you
can expect to hook fish while throwing
small swimbaits, top water lures and other
reaction baits.”

SACRAMENTO
– Fishing pressure
has been very
light at Folsom
Lake over the past
month. However,
cooler fall weather
should result in
improved fishing
for rainbow trout
and king salmon,
as well as for black
bass.
When the lake
undergoes its
annual fall turn
over, shore fishing
should become as
productive for trout
and salmon as
fishing from a boat
when the fish move
into the shallows
to feed on pond
smelt and threadfin
shad. Trollers
should employ
nightcrawlers
behind dodgers,
Speedy Shiners
and other lures,
HORNBROOK – The majority of
anglers and guides are now concentrating
on fishing on the upper section of the
Klamath River below the Iron Gate Fish
Hatchery. Both salmon and steelhead are
showing now.
“We’ve been seeing a lot of steelhead
on the upper river, so it’s going to be a
great fall steelhead season,” said Albert
Kutzkey of Kutzkey’s Guide Service.
“The salmon are showing up now and the
weather is turning cold. We are seeing
great weather and great fishing.”
Anglers are back bouncing salmon roe
and back trolling plugs for the Chinooks.
The steelhead can be caught on roe,
nightcrawlers, Glo Bugs, beads, plugs,
spinners and plugs.
Before he left the lower river, Kutzkey
reported solid king salmon fishing. “My
last week on the lower Klamath produced
limits of salmon every day,” Kutzkey
stated.
The basin in-river recreational quota is
7,637 adult Chinook Salmon for 2019.
Fishing regulations remain the same
as in 2018 with a two-fish daily bag limit,
with no more than one fish over 22 inches
(such as one adult and one jack). The
possession limit remains the same at six
fish, with no more than three fish over 22
inches (effectively three daily bag limits).
Additional season information can be
found on the CDFW’s ocean salmon
webpage, or by calling CDFW’s ocean
salmon hotline at (707) 576-3429 or the
Klamath-Trinity River hotline at (800) 564-
