KLAMATH/TRINITY RIVERS
Fly Fishermen Battle
Steelhead
HORNBROOK – Anglers fishing the
Klamath River from below the Iron Gate
Fish Hatchery to the Interstate 5 Bridge
continue to find excellent steelhead
action.
“Great steelhead fishing is available
on the upper Klamath right now,” said
Jack Trout at Jack Trout Fly Fishing
International. “They love the rains.”
Jack is using an array of fly patterns,
including rubberlegs, October caddis ,
posse buggers and red copper john size
#12s. “You can try egg patterns, but the
fish are focusing on bugs.,” said Trout.
“Some Glo Bug and egg patterns in size 8
mm work from time to time.”
The fish range from a half pound to
7 pounds, but the fish average 2 to 3
pounds each. For more information or to

The numbers of fall Chinook salmon and
steelhead returning to the Trinity River
Fish Hatchery in Lewiston continue to
be lower than normal. CDFW staff have
trapped 1,373 fall Chinooks, 242 coho
salmon and 14 adult steelhead to date in
2019.

KNIGHTS LANDING – Tom Broad of
Yuba City definitely picked the right day
to go fishing with Rob Reimers of Rustic
Rob’s Guide Service. He landed two
salmon weighing 40 and 32 pounds while
fishing with a Brad’s Killer Fish in a new
prototype “Dragon Glow” pattern below
the Knights Landing Bridge.
“The 40 pounder was the first fish we
hooked,” said Reimers. “The fish took
about 10 minutes to get in, but it seemed

“The fish were showing in the mouth
of the South Fork, but now the bite has
shifted over to the North Fork,” said Craig
Newton of Willfish Bait and Tackle. “The

heard of anybody targeting.”
Newton hasn’t heard of
anybody shore fishing for
trout and salmon lately with
the stormy weather, but bank
fishing should become as
productive as fishing from a
boat when the fish move into
the shallows to feed on pond
smelt and threadfin shad.
Bank fishermen should toss
out PowerBait, minnows and
nightcrawlers for trout and
salmon at Browns Ravine,
Folsom Point, Granite Bay, Five
Percent and other areas on the
lake.
“The black bass fishing was
pretty slow on my latest trip to
Folsom,” said Don Paganelli
of Paganelli’s Bass Fishing
Experience. “We landed two
fish on drop shot rigs and two
others on tubes at 15 feet deep.
The fish were all spotted bass
in the 1-1/2 to 2 lb. range.”
They fished all over the lake,
but caught the fish in the main
body off the peninsula. The
