Crowds Light As Anglers
Dodge Storms For Rocks &
Crabs!
BERKELEY - It looks as if the
rockfish season is set to end with a
bang at the end of the month. Heavy
sacks and jumbo crabs remain the
norm for East Bay charter anglers.
The only stumbling block has been
big storms and big waves that have
kept anglers off the ocean at times.
On the Happy Hooker the story has
been very positive
with, limits of rockfish
and full limits of big
crab hitting the deck.
“We’ll be offering
crab and rockfish
combo trips until the
bottomfish season
ends,” said Capt.
Jonathan Smith of
the Happy Hooker.
“The action has been
good and I expect it
to continue. When the
weather is up, we’ve
been fishing the coast
and the scores drop a
bit. When the weather
cooperates we hit
the Farallon Islands
and the bite has been
rocking good out there.
Once the rockfish
season ends we’ll be
headed up to Martinez
for sturgeon season.”

BODEGA BAY –
The commercial crab
vessels set their
gear ton Saturday,
December 14th with
their first pulls on
December 15th after
a month of delay due
to the potential for
whale entanglement.
The rockfish season
ends on December
31st, but the action
remains hot for both
rockfish and crab
despite the presence
of thousands of
commercial crab
pots.

Promar: Your Source For California
Legal Crabbing Gear
Rockfish and crabs have been the target of anglers fishing
aboard the Huli Cat this fall, but there have been some nice
lingcod in the mix too. This fish was landed on November 17.

W
ith crabbing season about to kick off in
northern California it’s time to start thinking
about crabbing gear. Maybe you’re an old salt and just
need to upgrade or replace equipment you’ve relied
on for years. On the
other hand, perhaps
you’re a novice
making your
first foray for
crabs. In either
case the folks
at Promar have
exactly what
you need.
Promar offers an
extensive line of both
rigid and collapsible crab
pots, hoop style crab nets and
even crab snares.
In addition to the traps them-

selves Promar offers bait bags and boxes, crabbing
line, rope, floats, gloves and more.
Traps used in California waters are
required to have a degradable
device such that if the trap
is lost it will become
inoperable and won’t
continue to catch
and kill crabs. The
current genera-
tion of Promar
traps meet these
requirements and
are California legal.
