Sand Crab Classic Perch Derby Will Open for Entries Soon!
SANTA CRUZ - The 16th
Annual Sand Crab Classic
Perch Derby will open for
online entries during the first
week of January. March 14,
2020 is the Derby date. Anglers
can surfcast anywhere they
choose, but must be present
prior to 1pm for weigh-in at the
Santa Cruz Portuguese Hall,
where the festivities take place.
Started in 2003 by Mike
Baxter and Allen Bushnell of The
Let’s Go Fishing Radio Show, the
wintertime derby was conceived
as “something to do when there’s
nothing to do,” according to
Baxter. All proceed from the Sand
Crab Classic are donated to the
Monterey Bay Salmon and Trout
Project, a 501C3 volunteer organi-
zation that continues hatchery and
advocacy operations supporting
native runs of steelhead and
salmon on the Central Coast.
The Derby features a great
number of raffle and silent auction
items, BBQ lunch plus trophies and
prizes for winning entries in both
Barred Surf Perch and Sea Perch
categories. Ultimately, the Sand
Crab Classic is an enjoyable day
of fishing with family and friends,
and extremely popular.
This is California’s biggest
fishing derby, for the smallest
saltwater game fish. Entries are
limited to the first 300 signups,
and the list fills rapidly. In 2019,
all 300 spots were filed within 30
hours of online access.
For 2020, entries will open
during the first week of January.
Potential contestants are advised
to keep a very sharp eye on the
Derby website, sandcrabclassic.
com so as not to miss the boat.

Jones of Kahuna Sportfishing.
The 22 anglers aboard the previous trip on the
Kahuna on December 29 caught 2 lingcod, 195
rockfish and 25 vermilion rockfish.
“We are anticipating a salmon season opener
on April 4 and a rockfish opener on April 1,” said
Jones. “We will be busy in the off season with annual
maintenance on the Kahuna. We are hoping for a LOT
less wind next year!”
Chris’ Fishing Trips ended their rockfish season on
December 31 with 5 lingcod and 250 rockfish (limits)
for 25 anglers aboard the Checkmate and 11 lingcod,
86 rockcod, 23 Dungeness crab and 22 rock crab for
19 anglers on the Caroline.
Since then, the operation has been booking
sanddab and crab combo adventures on Monterey
Bay. The 6 anglers on the Caroline bagged “lots of
sanddabs,” 18 Spanish mackerel and 40 Dungeness
crabs during a trip on January 2. The 13 anglers
aboard the Checkmate bagged “lots of sanddabs” and
70 Dungeness crabs on January 3.
“The crab fishing is still doing best in 220-280 feet
of water,” stated Todd Fraser at Bayside Marine in
Santa Cruz. “The perch fishing was good near
Blacks Point today near the harbor. There
