EAST DELTA I’m planning on a good bite through Sunday.” Captain Steve Mitchell of Hook’d Up Sport Fishing was out on Thursday in the Big Cut, and he said, “There were sturgeon all over the meter, and we had three good solid bites that were missed. I took this group out for a bonus trip after they had a halibut trip on the bay last year where the weather was very rough so I gave them another trip. The sturgeon starting biting at the end of the tide, but unfortunately, those bites were left wanting. We did pick up some legal stripers so there are stripers in the system.” - Dave Hurley Striped Bass Go On Bite STOCKTON - The striped bass have come flooding into the Sacramento side of the Delta, and the stretch between Rio Vista and Collinsville seems to be the lane in which they are traveling. This is a very early spring run, but Clyde Wands, shallow trolling expert, and others have been predicting the run arriving any day now. Dave Houston of Livermore was out with Wands and Roy Rodarte on Thursday, and he said, “There seemed to be a few less fish in the system and more boat traffic, and most of our fish came on the shallow troll with Yo-Zuri’s or Rat-L-Traps in chartreuse or silver/black. We didn’t find any fish willing to bite on the San Joaquin so all of our stripers came on the Sacramento between Broad Slough and the Rio Vista Bridge. We ended up with 20 stripers with half being undersized, and our largest fish was almost 10 pounds and it had three splittail in its stomach. Scott Marran of Yuba City also got in on the great action on Wednesday by trolling along the West Bank starting at the Red Barn with deep-diving lures. He said, “It was sparse for a couple of hours on undersized stripers along with one at 7 pounds until the outgoing tide went slack. Once the tide went slack, everything changed and the shorties quit and the bigger fish started biting. We ended up with 17 shakers and 11 keepers, keeping two limits from 8 to 11 pounds with our best action on Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows with a chartreuse body at three knots on the troll.” Kenji Nakagawa of Lodi was out on the Sacramento side of the river for a few hours on Wednesday, and he said, “We landed 19 stripers to 12 pounds, and all of the linesides were fresh from the bay with bright colors. The males were already milting. They were aggressive, and they hit every bait we threw out them with the better grade coming on glide baits, jerkbaits, and topwater lures in the shallows from 1 to 6 feet in depth. I got a few to go on the Phoney Frog glide bait, and Phenix’s new M180H swimbait rod is my new favorite for medium-sized glidebaits or swimmers. With this weather system moving in over the weekend, NOW BOOKING FEATHER RIVER MARYSVILLE – A mixture of smallmouth bass and striped bass are the reward for anglers trolling jumbo minnows on the Feather River in the stretch of river above Riverbend Park in Marysville. The fishing is up and down now, but should improve with the warming weather conditions. “Yesterday my dad, John, and caught six smallmouth bass to just under 3 pounds while trolling minnows for stripers,” said Mark Morrison of Mark Morrison’s Guide Service. “Most of the fish were in the 1 to 1-1/2 lb. range.” “On a previous trip, we landed a 30 inch striper, also while trolling with minnows,” he note. “However, today we had just one takedown,” noted Morrison. “The fish that had been holding on the edge of a mudline where a creek comes in had disappeared. We saw just one other boat with two anglers fishing; they reported catching and releasing two smallmouths in the 1-1/2 to 2 lb. range while throwing out plastic worms.” Mark Morrison is available for guided striped bass and smallmouth bass trips on the Feather, as well as for trout and salmon trips on Folsom Lake. Spring Chinook salmon: The emergency regulations listed in California Code of Regulations Title 14, subsection 7.50(b) (91.2) prohibit fishing for spring Chinook salmon in the Klamath River Basin from Jan. 1, 2020, through June 30, 2020. Chinook salmon fishing season will be open on the lower Klamath River between July 1 and Aug. 14, and on the upper Trinity River and New River between July 1 and Aug. 31. These emergency regulations supersede spring Chinook salmon fishing regulations found in the 2019-2020 California supplemental sport fishing regulations booklet. Steelhead: Fishing for steelhead in the Klamath and Trinity rivers remains open year-round consistent with CCR Title 14, subsection 7.50(b)(91.1) in the 2019-2020 regulations booklet. Fall Chinook salmon: The fall Chinook salmon season begins on Aug. 15, 2020, on the Klamath River and Sept. 1, 2020, on the Trinity River. Regulations CONTINUED ON PG 12 SACRAMENTO – The king salmon and rainbow trout fishing remains “off and on” on Folsom Lake, but anglers are beginning to pick up larger kings at the reservoir. “We caught 3-1/2 pound and 4-1/2 pound kings on recent trolling trips at Folsom,” said Jerry Lampkin of TNG Motor Sports Guide Service. “On the first trip, we landed a total of 7 fish, including a 3-1/2 lb. king measuring 22 inch inches that was caught by Bill Wagner, in addition to losing a half dozen fish. We trolled glow-in-the dark Apex lures at 80 to 100 feet deep after launching out of Granite Bay.” “On the next trip, we landed only two kings and one rainbow, but the top king was a 4-1/2 pound fish measuring 24 inches long that I brought in. Again, we caught the fish deep, at 80 to 100 feet. There was a nice mess of fish holding in the deep water,” he stated. On his latest trip to the lake, Lampkin didn’t end up with any big kings, but 6 kings to 13 inches and 3 rainbows to 17 inches were boated.
