Tahoe in comfort, offering both half and full day fishing adventures aboard their fleet of sportfishing boats equipped with comfortable heated cabins. TRINITY RIVER Fly Fishermen Battle Steelhead LEWISTON – Steelhead fishing on the Trinity River has been “very good “these past few weeks, according to Dave Neal of Lost Coast Outfitters. “We have had some of our best days of the season in early to mid-February,” he stated. “The wild fish have slowly trickled in and I suspect we’ll see more arrive when we get some rain and another good flow bump. It seems that a lot of anglers gave up on the Trinity this winter (as the Coast turned on). So, it has been really quiet lately.” “Mamy days we were the only boat on an entire stretch of river along with maybe one bank angler. The fish are around and they have all been wild. Swinging flies can be a good time right now,” he tipped. “The water conditions are back to very low and clear. It’s been on a slow drop for a while. I imagine things will be much tougher from here on out until we get rain. The fish in the river system will hunker down in the holes and deeper water, waiting for rain and flows to rise in the tributaries Keep an eye on the forecast and I would say Game On when we finally get some rain,” he concluded. Mackinaw action is going strong at Lake Tahoe. These fish were caught on a February 2 charter with the Tahoe Sportfishing Team! Photo courtesy of TAHOE SPORTFISHING, South Lake Tahoe. WEST DELTA Striper Bite Gets Started Early Justin Hatanaka caught this trio of huge rainbow trout while working a silver Kastmaster on February 11. The largest trout is over 8 pounds. PITTSBURG - Warm dry conditions during the second half of the winter have translated to elevated water temperatures and good water clarity in the West Delta. As a result, but stripers and sturgeon are on the bite, signaling an early start to the spring season. Trollers and pluggers tossing Fish Trap style swimbaits have nailed stripers up to 12 pounds this week and some anglers reported hooking as many as 18 bass. The striper fishing isn’t consistent yet with good fishing taking place one day and slow fishing the next, but with rising water temperatures the bite should get more and more consistent. With minimal outflow this spring coming down valley rivers, a lot of the striper spawning activity should take place in the upper Delta, meaning that the bulk of the striper population will be accessible for Delta anglers. Also, the fact that the harvest was light last fall, means that there will be more and bigger bass in the system. Sturgeon fishing has been steady all winter and is showing signs of ramping up with climbing water temperatures. Captain Hayden Mullins of Dragon Sportfishing is still putting his anglers on limit-style action while soaking a combination of salmon roe and eel in Suisun Bay. Traditionally spring sturgeon action gets really good in the Delta during the late March and April. This year, provided conditions don’t change drastically, look for the fishing get hot in early March. Spring Striper Subscription Special!
