our runs here and taking advantage of the
great weather. Most days have been quite
pleasant in the 50-60 degree range, with
very little wind. Various streamers have
been working well with #18 BWO’s getting
takes mid-day,” said Loe.
“The afternoon mayfly hatch on Hot
Creek has been loads of fun this month.
Some good hatches in the afternoons have
the fish looking up at everything that floats
by or lands on the water. Fishing smaller
midge patterns prior to the big hatch can
be deadly too. Small nymphs and egg
patterns are also doing the trick throughout
the day. Water is very clear and low, so
stay hidden for more bites,” Loe advised.

COLLINS LAKE
cont.
Carl & David West of Roseville who
caught 5 trout including 6 ¼ lb. and 7
¼ lb. fish, on Powerbait from the shore.
Folks are still catching from the shore but
it looks like trolling has an earlier start this
year than most.
We continue to receive trout plants
almost every week, most recently a DFW
plant and next week a Mt Lassen Trout
plant is scheduled.
I don’t have any pictures of bass for this
week but the few who are out doing catch
& release.
If you’re fishing plastic lures you
might just do what Dennis Eddings from
Marysville did and reel in a 9.25 catfish. I
don’t expect catfish activity to heat up until
later in the year- but if it stays dry and hot,
who knows? We might be seeing more
catfish than normal in early spring.
So far, it’s been a great March for
camping and outdoor activities. Check
availability and reserve online online

Shore Anglers Battle Big,
Bold ‘Bows
PORTOLA – The ice has completely left
Lake Davis and shore anglers are catching
good numbers of large holdover rainbows.
“I sent out two guys, Mike and Lee from
Reno, to fish from the bank at Mallard
Cove,” said Jim Graham of the J&J Grizzly
Campground and Resort. “They came
back with four rainbows each over 3
pounds after fishing PowerBait. Another
angler caught a five pound rainbow while
fishing PowerBait.”
The Lightning Tree Boat Ramp was
accessible, but launching at the other boat
ramps was “iffy” at press time, Graham
reported.
“The roads are all clear,” said Graham.
“It has been snowing today, but the snow
is light and is not sticking.”
There are lots of trout in the lake for
anglers to catch at Davis. The California
Department of Fish and Wildlife stocked
11,000 pounds of rainbows, including 2,000
pounds of Eagle Lake trout, at Davis last fall.
Lake Davis is holding 61,925 acre feet
of water, 75 percent of capacity and 101
percent of average.

Striped Bass and Catfish
Stirring with Warmer Weather
LIVERMORE – Striped bass are
showing in increasing numbers with the
early spring weather arriving at Lake Del
Valle.
Just ask Jayson Heist from Livermore,
who had a great day when he caught a
7.77 lb. striper and a 6.5 lb. striper in the
Narrows while fishing anchovies.
Kenny Khu caught a 7 lb. and a 6 lb.
striper in Swallow Bay while tossing out
sardines.
Juan Rivera from San Jose landed a
10.75 lb. striper and a 7.75 lb. catfish
in the Lower Narrows while soaking
anchovies.
Trout plants are keeping fishing
enthusiasts busy. Hot spots for trout
continue to be across from the Marina,
Lowers Narrows, Venados Group site,
Badger Cove, Swallow Bay, and the Dam.
The top lures for trout include Rapalas,
Kastmasters in green/orange, chartreuse
Mice Tails, gold Kastmasters and fire tiger
Panther Martins.

Trout Fishing &
Weather Excellent
SACRAMENTO – Jerry Lampkin of TNG
Motor Sports Guide Service reported his
best trolling adventure to date this year
on Folsom Lake when Mark Scott from
Georgetown and Dave Kese from Grass
Valley and him boated 14 fish, including
10 salmon and 4 rainbows, this March.
“Mark’s big salmon was 22 inches long
and weighted 3.6 lbs.” said Lampkin. “It
hit a GVF pina colada spin bug behind
a nickle glow crush dodger down at 90
ft and 1.5 mph. Dave’s fish was also
22 inches, but weighed 3.9 lbs. It hit a
Baboom Brad’s cut plug behind a blue UV
sling blade dodger at 80 ft and 1.5 mph
also.”
“Most of these fish were caught in the
river channel just outside the Granite Bay
boat ramp,” said Lampkin. “The rainbows
hit nightcrawlers behind Sep’s watermelon
sidekick dodgers on the surface,150 ft.

Trollers Lay into Big Kings
BISHOP- “ The Upper Owens River is
still firing on all cylinders,” exclaimed Tom
Loe of Sierra Drifters Guide Service. “Big
fish are being caught left and right. The
crowds are increasing here, but we have
plenty of water to fish with easy access.”
“There is a pretty good bite on the Lower
Owens as the river fish have returned
to a more typical
feeding behavior.
We are seeing very
solid BWO hatches
in the afternoons,
with some lasting a
couple of hours and
others going for 40
minutes or so. We

Big trout honors go to Daryl Hill from
San Jose, who caught an 8.05 lb. trout
across from the Marina while soaking
Power Eggs.
The East Bay Regional Park District
stocked Del Valle with 1000 pounds of
rainbows the week of March 9-13 and
1000 pounds the week of March 16-
20. The CFW stocked 1000 pounds of
catchable rainbows the week of March
16-20.
Fishing for bluegill and crappie is picking
up with the warmer weather. For example,
John Flertcher from San Ramon bagged
2 crappie that both weighed a half-pound
while using a small spoon near the
Marina.
MARYSVILLE - Smallmouth bass and
striped bass continue to be the reward
for anglers trolling jumbo minnows on the
Feather River in the stretch of river above
Riverbend Park in Marysville. The fishing
is up and down now, but should improve
with the warming weather conditions as
more fish move into the system.
On the latest trolling adventures that
Mark Morrison of Mark Morrison’s Guide
Service made on the Feather River with his
dad, they caught smallmouth bass to just
under 3 pounds and stripers to 30 inches.
Mark Morrison is available for guided
striped bass and smallmouth bass trips
on the Feather, as well as for trout and
salmon trips on Folsom Lake. For more
information, call (916) 308-3226.
Department of Water Resources
releases into the Feather River below
Oroville Dam continue to be only 1750 cfs.
The Feather River Fish Hatchery is
seeing another good steelhead run this
season, with 1738 total adult steelhead,
including 912 males and 669 females,
counted to date. They also returned 80
half pounders to the river.
The egg total is 1.5 million eggs so far
– and the hatchery has to take at least 1
million eggs to meet their production goal
of 450,000 smolts.”
