Freshwater reports:
ROLLINGS/SCOTTS FLAT cont.
Pleece of Meadow Vista. “I’ve been using
Ned Rigs and small Senkos at Rollins for a
mix of spotted bass and a few smallmouths.
The spots run up to about 2 pounds and
the biggest smallmouth I got was about a
pound. The bass seem to be holding from
15 to 30 feet deep for the most part. On my
last bass trip I brought 9 bass to the kayak.”
“For rainbow trout, I’ve been trolling
Cripplures in brass and orange and brass
and red colors. I’ve got a few trout while
top lining, but most of them come 10 to 20
feet deep while trolling with leadcore,” said
Pleece.
James Pratt has been hitting Rollins
Lake after work from his Hobie Pro Angler.
James has been targeting both bass and
crappie. He’s had little problem hooking
bass, but crappie have been hard to
locate. On his last trip, he got a handsome
10-inch crappie while working a tree top in
25 feet of water.
At Scotts Flat, bass are the main
attraction. A few northern strain
largemouths have been landed, but most
of the bass caught so far this season
have been smallmouths ranging from 12
to 14 inches in length. Soft plastics and
suspending minnow plugs are the most
effective offering for visiting anglers.
Fishing pressure has been light at both
Rollins and Scotts.

GUERNEVILLE - Anglers were catching
steelhead on the Russian River just as a
winter storm was poised to bring up storm
flows, according to King’s Sport & Tackle:
“It was the Last day of summer weather
before returning to Winter! Flows are holding
near 400 cfs so the river remains open to
fishing but you can always call the low flow
hotline (707-944-5533) to double check.
New fish continue to move through
in small numbers with both hatcheries
receiving about 200 fish each last week.
Local action was good this morning with
fish being caught near Guerneville by both
gear and fly fisherman. Jigs under a float
continue to be the big winner with swung
comets and bosses producing for the fly
fisherman.
Rain chances are back Saturday with
anywhere from 0.25” to 1.5” depending
on location in the Russian River Valley.
A freshet will definitely help. Don’t forget
both the low flow and bait season close
April 1 as well as all of the coastal rivers.

Striped Bass Arrive
in Capital City
SACRAMENTO – The
spring run of striped bass
has just arrived in the
Sacramento area, rewarding
bank anglers fishing off Bryte
Beach and other access
points on the river.
“The stripers have finally
arrived at Bryte Beach,”
said Uncle Larry Barnes
of Sacramento Pro Tackle.
“Anglers are catching mostly
small males up to 5 pounds
while throwing out blood
worms, pile worms, cut
anchovies, cut sardines and
other baits.”
The other striped bass
hot spot that Barnes cited is
the Mokelumne River and
Snodgrass Slough near
Wimpy’s Marina. Larger
stripers up to 30 pounds can
be caught there by anglers
trolling Yo-Zuris, drifting
jumbo minnows and throwing
out an array of swimbaits.

Sacramento River Spring Stripers
“March, April and May means striped
bass fishing in California’s Sacramento
River. This striper fishery in California
very well could be the best fishing on
the West Coast. While stripers can be
fished year-round, we target them during
the prime spring months. Striped bass
ranging in size from
two- to 50-pounds
are caught. Every
day, someone,
somewhere on the
Sacramento River
will likely catch a
25- to 35-pound
striped bass, and that
someone could be
you,” says Dan.

Cal Kellogg On Sturgeon Fishing
With Can Ponciano
“Fishing the Willamette River with Dan
was a game changer. I’d caught my share
of sturgeon in California, but I wasn’t
ready for the sheer number of biting fish we
encountered in Oregon. We literally brought
50 plus sturgeon to the boat that ranged
from 30 to 72 inches. I personally landed
and released 10 California size keepers by
lunchtime. If you really want to experience
sturgeon fishing, don’t hesitate to jump
board Dan’s boat, he is a true professional
and lots of fun to fish with,” said Kellogg.
