PITTSBURG - Anglers fishing the West Delta are enjoying an early kick off to the striper season landing limits and near limits while trolling and soaking bait. Sturgeon fishing had been slow, but is improving as of press time. “With little in the way of rain and warm temperature, the Delta striper trolling season has gotten off to an early start,” reported Captain David Hammond of Delta Pro Fishing. “On my last trip, we got limits of bass while trolling Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows. The fish are starting to move around, so you don’t know where you’ll find them from day to day. I think this is going to be a really good spring.” Rob Fey and Marcus Schmidt hit the Delta on March 8 and found good striper action on cut bait. “We wanted to fish along the channel edge near the power lines below Rio Vista, but it was pretty windy so we headed up river toward Isleton to find some shelter,” related Fey. “We anchored up and landed 11 stripers while fishing chicken livers and anchovy chunks. We ended up with three keepers from 19 to 23 inches long.” Sturgeon anglers are finding success throughout Suisun Bay on both eel and salmon roe. The key to hooking sturgeon seems to be patience. The bite had been slow, but is improving as more and more fish become active. We supply everything you need to fish! Mackinaw Kokanee Salmon Rainbow Trout Brown Trout LEWISTON – Only 378 steelhead have returned to the Trinity River Fish Hatchery this season, with only or two more weeks of steelhead trapping before spawning will be entirely wrapped up at Trinity River Hatchery this season. That compares to 1869 steelhead last year and 2,049 steelhead the previous season. The hatchery needs eggs from about 420 female fish to meet their goal, and that is not going to happen this year, unfortunately. The fall Chinook numbers were also down in 2019, with only 1,586 fish reported total. The total including spring Chinook was 6,064 fish total. Spring Run Chinook fishing remains closed on the Upper Trinity River and New River until July 1. Chinook salmon fishing season will be open on the lower Klamath River between July 1 and Aug. 14, and on the upper Trinity River and New River between July 1 and Aug. 31. These emergency regulations supersede spring Chinook salmon fishing regulations found in the 2019-2020 California supplemental sport fishing regulations booklet. Fishing for steelhead in the Trinity rivers remain open year-round consistent with CCR Title 14, subsection 7.50(b)(91.1) in the 2019-2020 regulations booklet. - Dan Bacher Saturday, April 4, 2020 Veterans Memorial Park in Colusa, CA 25% OF THE DAY’S PROFITS GO TO THE COLUSA DUCKS 25% OF THE DAY’S PROFITS GO TO THE COLUSA VFW 8 A .M.
