10 April 10-24, 2020 VOL.39 • ISS. 9 Robust Fishing Should Be On Tap For Eagle Lake Anglers In 2020 A ngling pressure was light at Eagle Lake in 2018 and 2019, so the number of fish in the system for the 2020 season should be robust. Most days in 2019, experienced anglers caught limits or near limits of Eagle Lake Trout. The fish were healthy, beautiful and the overall SIZE of the Eagle Lake Trout was very impressive. They have grown big shoulders and the increase in their girth is readily evident. I’d estimate that a 20-inch fish is a half-pound heavier than the same size fish was three years ago. Check your knots and leaders often while fishing Eagle Lake. From opening day in late May through June, with cooler water temperatures, we caught fairly easy limits in shallow water over structure. Grubs and trolling flies were deadly. In July and August, there was a very good “thermocline bite”. This had been something we could count on in previous years but had failed to materialize again until last year. Fishing spoons from 25-30 feet on the west side of the lake kept anglers busy during the normally dog days of summer. Many limits and near limits were taken. Again, nice sized fish. There was an extended Indian Summer in 2019, which made the bite tough in September and October. The overall quality of the trout helped make up for the slower Indian Summer bite with high 3 and 4-pound fish landed. Once the weather cooled the fall/ winter bite took off. Limit style fishing with many quality three and four-pound fish taken. Fly fishermen wading from shore at the south end of the lake experienced a terrific bite in November and December. For experienced anglers, a 10+ fish, catch and release day was possible. A decent number of five and a few six-pound fish were caught. The lake level remains good. I, and many others, launched at the Spalding Launch Ramp all season in 2019. At this time, the lake elevation is about one foot higher than it was at this time last year. There are new tule stands in most areas of the lake which are a magnet for feeding Eagle Lake Trout. I plan to fish them early in the 2020 season. In 2020, I will be offering guided trips for parties up to four all season at Eagle Lake. Whether you are fishing with me or not, don’t hesitate to call me for a current report. And if you see me on the water give a shout out. Tim Noxon Fish Traveler Guide Service (916) 201-4648 Discover CATCH MORE TROUT WITH...
