Statement from Nor-Cal Guides &
Sportsmen’s Association on Fishing During the Pandemic
For the past 6 weeks, since the Governor
of California declared that all Califor-
nian’s must “shelter in place”, NCGASA
has been constantly engaged with the Cali-
fornia Fish and Game Commission and
the Department of Fish and Wildlife as it
relates to all things recreational angling
and guiding. We have fought for the oppor-
tunity to keep recreational angling open
with minimal closures necessitated only
due to health and human safety concerns
of COVID-19. We have further engaged
in numerous conversations about the
appropriateness of guiding, boat launch
access, recreational angler opportunity,
and many other topics. We have hosted
Facebook live sessions with over 500
people in attendance. We have assisted in
shutting down Internet rumors and worked
with the Department and Commission on
the creation and

public statements on
these topics.

and unemployment, and notify you about
opportunities such as the PPP program
and other business assistance programs.
We are not here to tell you how to operate
your business, which programs you should
apply for, etc. We recognize that this time
is extremely challenging for many in our
specific community. Any decisions you
make about your business and your family
should be made based on State and County
directives and your moral and ethical
compass.
As many of you are aware, there have
been a few guides that have continued to
run their daily trips. We have received
many inquiries about “can we guide or
not”. Once again NCGASA IS NOT here
to provide legal advice. Since we have
reached out to the department numerous
times and have yet to receive any directive,
we as your board of directors have
discussed this in length and will give you
our opinion on this matter.
If you choose to guide during this
difficult time, (and we are not saying you
should or shouldn’t) we advise you to
implement your own precautions. Don’t
pack your boat full of clients, do your best
to practice social distancing, sanitize your
boat after each trip, etc. Most companies
have reduced the number of people they let
in their business, they are practicing social
distancing as much as possible, using
face masks, sanitizing common areas etc.
All things that the medical industry has
advised us to do to help combat the spread
of Covid-19.
Furthermore, besides the directive from
Governor Newsom, every county has
given their own set of directives. We can’t
emphasize this enough, CHECK WITH
THE COUNTY YOU LIVE IN and then
make your own decision based on your
findings.
This is a very tough time for all. We as
your board will continue to fight for you
and do everything we can to keep you
informed.
Stay safe out there and tight lines!

“When I am fishing a frog or flipping matted
vegetation, I am throwing the new X-TCB 8 Car-
rier Braided Line form P-Line. It is critical to be
stealthy with both techniques, and with P-line’s
new braid, you can make longer casts and it is
ultra quiet coming through the grass.”
