Jim Graham of the J&J Grizzly Store and
Campground Resort. “Fishermen are
tossing out nightcrawlers and Power Bait
at 10 feet deep.”
“Fishing at Lake Davis has been steady
for trollers,” confirmed Ed Dillard, fishing
guide. “We have been getting 15 fish a
day. We have been using Baby Simon
lures. The color changes throughout the
day and same with the depth, from 6 feet
to 20 feet. Most fish are 15 to 16 inches,
with some 19 and 20 inch mixed in.”
Black bass fishing is going strong at
Camp Five, Eagle Point and Lighting
Tree, reported Graham. Bank and shore
anglers are hooking the largemouth while
tossing top water lures and crankbaits.
One angler caught and released a 5 lb.
largemouth while tossing out a frog. Best
on crankbaits and top water, including a 5
pounder on a frog. Boat and shore.
True to its name, Catfish Cove
continues to kick out good numbers of
brown bullhead catfish to anglers fishing
nightcrawlers and prepared catfish baits.
The boat ramps are open and all three
docks are in the water, said Graham. The
Forest Service Campgrounds are open.
“We opened for camping on May 29,
2020.,” added Graham. “There will be
some restrictions imposed by the current
county COVID 19 rules:
• Self-contained units only. No tents;
or trailers that do not have working
bathrooms.
• Only people living in the same
household in a site.
• You can only reserve one site; no
group camping.”

Rainbows Are Loading Up on
Shad
LA GRANGE – The trout bite has been
‘hit or miss’ as the fish are scattered, but
they are loading up on shad.
Monte Smith of Gold Country Sport
Fishing said, “We landed six rainbows
and a nice king salmon out of 8 strikes.
We scored with ExCel spoons behind a
Sling Blade or running solo. The trout are
scattered, and it was a matter of finding

them. However, the trout were loaded with
between 3- to 6 shad. There were some
bait balls up high in the water column, and
the bass were feeding on the shad on the
surface.”
The topwater bite for bass is better
than at nearby McClure as the bass are
moving out into the main lake points. The
overall action is less for numbers than
at McClure. The lake is at 87 percent of
capacity.

Eagle Lake Opens To

Fishing at the Eagle was outstanding last season with an abundance of
big rainbows showing during the fall months. When the lake opened this
May, anglers found excellent action on trout to 4 pounds.

23. Since then, California has
had a heat wave and so has
Eagle Lake.
The surface water
temperature has increased
from 53 on May 23 to 66 at
Pelican Point and 63 at Gallatin
Marina at the south end of the
lake. Many, not all, fish have
moved out of the shallows and
scattered to deeper water.
The heatwave and a bright
full moon have also hampered
fishing a bit.
One exception to the above:
Anglers trolling flies on a Jay
Fair set up are still catching
fish in the shallows. Best bite
is EARLY. Best fly color, bright
orange. Try the west side from
Pelican Point south.
I have been trolling spoons
on downriggers from Shrimp
Island to Wildcat Point from
8-15 feet deep. We are fishing
water 30-50 feet deep. We
are catching fish on red/gold
spoons. Do not go deeper than
20 feet or you will be catching
more Tui Chubs than trout.
I have also been trolling grubs
from Gallatin Marina to Miner’s
Bay on the east side. Troll
the grubs on downriggers at
6-8 feet deep early. After the sun hits the
water, I switch out to orange/silver spoons
and troll them 10-12 feet deep in the same
areas.
Most days we are catching limits to near
limits. The fish we are keeping are running
