VOL.39 • ISS. 14 EAGLE LAKE cont. 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 lbs. We are also hooking and releasing a fair number of 14-inch trout. The weather cooled down yesterday. Night time temperatures have dropped to the low 30’s and are forecasted to run from the low 30’s to the low to mid 40’s for the next week. I am going to again start my mornings fishing the shallows this next week as I expect the fish to “move back in” due to these cooler night time temperatures. We shall see. I am available for guided fishing on Eagle Lake. However, whether you are fishing with me or not, do not hesitate to call me if you need questions answered or need a current fishing, help with lodging, campsites, or whatever. -Tim Noxon, Fish Traveler Guide Service. EAST BAY LAKES Chabot Marina Open, Shore Fishing Open on Other Lakes CASTRO VALLEY – Lake Chabot Marina reopened on May 23, but boat rentals are limited to one person and two kids from the same household per boat. Los Vaqueros Reservoir Features Excellent Striped Bass And Trout Fishing S ince Los Vaqueros Reservoir opened to fishing in September 2001, the lake has hosted an ever-changing fishery for trout, king salmon, largemouth bass, channel catfish and striped bass. While the reservoir was dominated by the lake’s rainbow trout and king salmon fishery in the first couple of years after it opened to fishing, a growing striped bass and catfish population has grown to highlight the fishery in the past several years. Stripers were never planted in the lake, but come in as fry through the canal that supplies the lake with Delta water. Anglers use a variety of methods to nail the stripers. Bait anglers fish anchovies along the shoreline and the piers of south end. Fly fishermen find success using white and chartreuse Clouser Minnow patterns and other large flies, while lure fishing enthusiasts toss out rainbow trout patterns swim baits, Rapalas and Rebels, particularly right after a trout plant. Shore fishermen nail the trout in the South Cove near the marina, off the piers, off Oak Point and along the rockwall. The top enticers are Panther Martins and Kastmasters right after a plant and PowerBait, Power Eggs, nightcrawlers and salmon eggs the rest of the time. Trollers fishing lures and nightcrawlers behind dodgers from rental boats also take quality rainbows. While channel and white catfish aren’t found in the numbers that some lakes host, those caught are mostly quality fish in the 7 to 25 pound range. Other fish found in the lake include largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, redear sunfish, carp, Sacramento suckers, Sacramento blackfish, threadfin shad and other species found in the Delta. While bass can be caught year-round, fishing is best in the spring and summer. A group of carp enthusiasts, many European immigrants, regularly fish the lake for carp. The lake’s south entrance is located at 9990 Los Vaqueros Road, Byron, Ca. The north entrance can be found at 100 Walnut Blvd, Brentwood, Ca. For more information call (925) 371-2628. FEATHER RIVER/ THEMALITO AFTERBAY Shad and Striper Fishing Rated Spotty MARYSVILLE - Shad fishing has tapered off on the Feather River, though anglers can still pick up fish below the Live Oak Rock Dam and Shanghai Rapids. The Department of Water Resources is now releasing 3,000 cfs on the Feather River from Lake Oroville. Nonetheless, boaters and some bank anglers are catching and releasing good numbers of shad. The striped bass fishing is also “hit or miss,” said Trevor Sinclair at Johnson’s Bait and Tackle. “Shore and boat anglers are picking up a few stripers while using cut baits and to water lures in the Feather below Boyd’s Pump,” he stated. “A better bet is to fish the Sacramento River between Verona and Boyd’s Pump. There are a lot of shakers showing now, along with small keepers in the 18 to 19 inch class.” Boaters are picking up largemouth bass in the 2 to 5 lb. range while flippin’, throwing plastic frogs and tossing out squarebill crankbaits in the Thermalito Afterbay around tules and brush. Fishermen working crappie jigs and small minnows are also catching crappie around brush and tules in the afterbay, advised Sinclair. - Dan Bacher FOLSOM LAKE Trollers Lay Into Holdover Rainbows SACRAMENTO – Trollers getting out early in the morning before the heavy recreational boating traffic hits the lake are nailing good numbers of rainbow trout. “One local angler, Leo, and his fishing partner caught early limits on their latest June 26, 2020 Powered by Clean, Quiet, Dependable Honda 4 Stoke Outboards.
