VOL.39 • ISS. 14 SALTWATER June 26, 2020 25 FISHERMAN’S WHARF cont. The 7 anglers returned with full limits of striped bass and 18 halibut, reported Erik Anfinson, Captain of the Bass Tub. On the latest trolling adventure outside of the Golden Gate, the 12 anglers fishing with Captain Aaron, Erik’s brother, landed 16 king salmon. The fish hit trolled anchovies off the Marin County Coast. “A couple of people wanted to know how we clean the boat every night and throughout the day,” said Anfinson. “We wipe everything down several times a day with bleach/soap/and HOT water. There is hand sanitizer at every rod holder and at the end of the night the boat is completely washed with soap and bleach. Then we spray everything with a special cleaner to sterilize overnight. OCD? Your safety is number one!!” - Dan Bacher Limits and near limits of salmon to 20 has been the rule for Bay Area salmon anglers working beyond the Golden Gate. Previously, the waters were limited to private boats with a slip in the harbor. A spurt of salmon activity began southwest of the harbor near the Deep Reef during the second week of June as party boats from San Francisco, Sausalito, Berkeley, and Emeryville made the long run south for limits of a quality grade of salmon, but the action died within a few days as the sae boats made the long run for scores ranging from 2 to 5 fish on Thursday, June 11th. Captain Jerad Davis of the Salty Lady out of Sausalito was one of the boats that ran as far south as just above Pigeon Point, and he said, “There were boats that ran further south than us. It was a tough day, and I’m very glad that we didn’t have a day like this on the opener. I still think the salmon are in the area, they just went off of the bite. This was a pretty typical score for the day as everyone struggled mightily. I don’t think I will make the long run again unless it is absolutely necessary for numbers. The good think about the salmon down south is that they were all quality which is not necessarily the norm in the area.” Captain Tom Mattusch of the Huli Cat has been concentrating on salmon, but he has had excellent rockfish/crab combination trips with up to 11 limits of rockfish, 11 limits of Dungeness crab, and ling cod to 13 pounds. Second Captain Michael Cabanas of the Huli Cat was one of the many boats starting salmon trolling off of the Deep Reef in 200 feet of water, and they stuck it out for one salmon to 6 pounds.
