On the salmon fishing front, anglers fishing aboard the New Easy Rider with Captains Joe and Joey Gallia have been doing very well on big bright ocean run kings while trolling rigged bait. On June 13, the New Easy Rider’s 11 anglers boated 17 salmon to 18 pounds. The next day they scored 21 kings to 18 plus pounds for 12 anglers. Shore anglers have gotten some keeper halibut while working both swimbaits and still fishing with cut bait. SALTWATER that was massed up southwest of the Bodega Bay Harbor. The salmon action had been spotty up this point, but Captain Rick Powers of the New Sea Angler found the salmon earlier in the week on one of his combination trips, and the action continued throughout the week. After loading up with limits of rockfish, several ling cod, and limits of salmon earlier in the week, Powers put together another tremendous combination trip on Thursday, June 11, with 16 anglers out for 21 ling cod, limits of quality rockfish, and 14 salmon to 18 pounds. He said, “Friday’s trip was even better with 18 limits of salmon, 18 limits of quality rockfish, and several ling cod. The salmon averaged from 12 to 14 pounds so the grade is excellent. This is the year of the big salmon, and I am expecting some truly huge fish over the summer months. They are hot and hard to hold onto as they are feeding on krill. Our loads have been light, and people are really enjoying the additional room. There were at least four or five fishermen who are going home with a limit of salmon, a limit of lings, and a limit of rockfish. The salmon have been on the surface between 30 and 50 feet in 240 feet of water.” Captain and co-owner of the Reel Magic, Merlin Kolb, also found the salmon on Friday after searching high and low before switching over to rockfish the previous day. Kolb said, “The salmon are in the krill which is only 15 minutes from the harbor. We ended up with one fish shy of limits, but we had the final fish on six times coming off each time before we had to call it a day. The water turned colder at 54 degrees, and the salmon started to bite.” Get Your Fish On!
