EAGLE LAKE
Eagle Lake Opener Yields
Good Fishing!
SPALDING - “Saturday, May 23 was the
opening day at Eagle Lake this season.
We launched at the Spalding Launch
Ramp at 5AM. The water was a cool 53
degrees. The lake has been closed since
12/31/19 so where do you go? Everyone
had to guess. We headed to the Youth
Camp shoreline,” said Tim Noxon of Fish
Traveler Guide Service.
“Once there, we dropped in grubs and
flies, trolling them on downriggers set at
4-7 feet deep. We trolled in water from
8-20 feet deep targeting trout feeding near
the surface. The action was not hot but
it was good. We had a fish on or a bite
about every 20 minutes. We landed 8 fish
releasing all but two. We had a few quick
strikes and a few quick “on and offs” We
also lost a beautiful fish that was all of 4
pounds at the boat. The two fish we kept
weighted in at 3lbs, 14oz and 3lbs even,”
said Noxon.
“The water clarity is not good at present.
I could not see my downrigger ball beyond
three feet deep. However, anglers trolling
in water 40-50 feet deep reported catching
fish on downriggers set at 15 feet,
indicating that the water clarity may only
be bad shallower in the water column,”
Noxon concluded.

YouTube fame, and they had a great day
of spooning and drifting live bait. Soo
Hoo said, “We found quality stripers to 12
pounds, and the key is to stay away from
the schools of shakers. There are a lot
of shakers in both the Sacramento and
San Joaquin system, and I will move right
away when we are in the shakers.”
“I am using a variety of spoons
depending on the current and the water
clarity, and it really makes a difference
to use spoons with a different flutter in
certain conditions. I focus on the following
color patterns: black back, blue back, or
Ayu in the 40 to 60-gram range, but if the
water is stained, we switch over to live
bait. When the tides are large, I will be
moving into the shallows over the shoals.
Stacy really enjoyed working the spoons,
and her video will be coming out on her
YouTube channel soon,” stated Soo Hoo.

took a crew trip to target sturgeon

for a total of 7 sturgeon released

“We really didn’t find the numbers
of sturgeon in Suisun Bay that we

Perhaps it was the unusual weather
with no rain during the month of
January, but the numbers were
diminished overall.”
