ALMANOR
Trout Bite As Lake Transitions
Into Early Summer Pattern
CHESTER - According to the Lake
Almanor Fishing Association, there has
been little change on Almanor since last
week. Visibility remains at 15-18 feet,
lake level is up a couple of tenths and the
water temperature remains in the high
fifties. Canyon Dam is the only public
ramp currently open and traffic is heavy
on weekends. Boat traffic on the water is
also increasing as we begin to see some
jet skis and ski boats.
Fish remain scattered throughout the
lake with the majority of the fish targeting
insects in the area between Prattville and
the tip of the Peninsula North. Fish are
scattered throughout the water column
and you will need to adjust depths, speed
and presentation based upon water
conditions.
Slow troll gulps and crawlers when the
lake is flat at 1 mph, or pull Arctic Fox
trolling flies at 1.8-2 mph and/or hardware
early in the morning or when there chop
on the water.
Bass fishermen continue to pick up
quality fish on hard and soft baits and fly
fishermen are picking up both bass and
trout. The Hex hatch is still 3 to 4 weeks
away.
All PG&E and USFS campgrounds
remain closed with no official opening date
announced. Winds and cool mornings
have made for uncomfortable conditions
there will be an increase in both day and
night-time temps this week, with no threat
of precipitation in the near future.

AMADOR LAKE
Largemouth Bass, Channel
Cats and Trout Offer Top
Angling
IONE – Lake Amador was crowded
over the Memorial Day holiday, but the
transition to summer mode has begun
with largemouth bass and catfish taking
center stage with the hot weather.
The whiskerfish are found in 15 feet of
water with nightcrawlers or chicken livers.
A trout even was landed on liver. Trout
plants are completed for the season.
Robbie Dunham of Koke Machine Guide
Service took out a couple that hadn’t been
fishing in years, and they had six cutbows
to nearly 5 pounds in the box working
Speedy Shiners from 15 to 35 feet before
the couple went back to their vehicle to
grab their lunches at 11:00 a.m.
Upon return to the water, the boat traffic
became intense, and the bite shut down.
The lake is 2 feet from full as the recent
storms have brought the lake up quickly
along with inflow from Lake Pardee. They
are open for fully self-contained trailers or
RV’s by reservation only.

French Meadows Kicks Out
Rainbows, Browns
AUBIURN – Boaters and bank anglers
are picking up rainbow and brown trout at
French Meadows Reservoir.
“A friend of a customer landed an 11 lb.
brown trout while using a Rapala while
trolling a Rapala at French Meadows,”
said Craig Newton at Willfish Bait and
Tackle.
Other trollers are picking up rainbows
and browns ranging from 12 to 18 inches
long while using worms behind dodgers,
Rapalas and other minnow plugs,
according to Newton. Bank fishermen are
hooking both species to 3 pounds while
tossing
out
inflated
nightcrawlers in
the river inlet and
off the dam.
For kokanee,
anglers should head
to Hell Hole Reservoir.
Boaters are trolling
hoochies, tipped with
white corn, behind
Sling Blades and
other dodgers
at 35 to 45 feet
deep. Targeting
mackinaws with
Rapalas and other
stick baits near
the bottom and
targeting browns
with Rapalas along
the shoreline early
and late in the day
is worth a try.
As summer
starts and folks
get anxious to get
out and enjoy the
outdoors, SMUD is
again stocking three
Sierra reservoirs with
rainbow trout. The fish
planting starts in June
and runs into August. SMUD will stock
25,000 pounds of fish at Union Valley,
Loon Lake and Ice House reservoirs in El
Dorado County.
SMUD has scheduled six separate
trout plantings. The largest of the three
reservoirs, Union Valley, will get 9,400
pounds; Loon Lake, 8,100 pounds;
and Ice House, 7,500 pounds. Mount
Lassen Trout Farms of Payne’s Creek
will deliver the fish. The company also
stocks SMUD’s Rancho Seco Lake, which
annually hosts a very popular trout derby.
