DAVIS LAKE
Spring Ice Out Expected Soon
PORTOLA – The ice out at Lake Davis hasn ’ t taken place yet , although Jeanne Graham at J & J ’ s Grizzly Store and Camping Resort . says that should occur soon . “ The lake is still frozen although the edges are breaking up and I saw a couple of places with 1 to 2 feet of open water ,” reported Graham . “ You can ’ t safely fish the lake at this time , so I haven ’ t heard any fishing reports lately .” As open water develops on the lake , Graham advises shore anglers to toss out worms and jigs near the edge of the remaining ice to hook some quality rainbows . Anglers can expect to catch some beautiful holdover rainbows measuring 16 to 18 inches long and longer . “ The good news about the water conditions this year is that the water should stay cold into July ,” she advised . The lake is currently holding 69 ,, 196 acre-feet of water , 83 percent of capacity and 110 percent of average .

Kokanee Salmon Begin Hitting At Both Lakes
LA GRANGE – Kokanee salmon and rainbow trout re now hitting the same lures at the same depths at New Melones Reservoir as the spring kokanee bite begins . On a recent scouting trip , Monte Smith of Gold Country Sportfishing and a friend reported landing four kokanee , losing four kokanee and having several missed opportunities . The also kept four rainbow trout and released others . “ Trout are easy to catch if that ’ s what you want ,” he noted .. “ Two of the kokes measured 15- 1 / 2 inches and two went 13-1 / 2 inches ,” said Smith . “ We caught the fish on hoochies and J-Pex lures behind Paulina Peak dodgers . We trolled from the spillway north into the Angels Creek arm . Kokanee and rainbows are mixed in together at the same depths , from 8 to 15 feet .” Kokanee are just starting to bite at Don Pedro . On his most recent trip to Don Pedro , one woman fishing with Smith caught and released a dozen rainbows up to 2 / 12 pounds . “ We were trolling with kokanee gear , including hoochies and Apex lures and spinners , at 25 to 35 feet deep in the main body . We didn ’ t pick up any kokanee that day ,” said Smith . At press time , Smith was fishing on Don Pedro . “ Today we have caught one kokanee around 14 inches at 40 to 45 feet deep in Middle Bay and let 4 rainbows go , We have kept a rainbow , kokanee and king weighing 1-1 / 2 pounds so far ,” he tipped . On a previous trip , to Don Pedro , three anglers fishing with Smith landed 13 rainbows and lost several fish . “ The fishing is finally heating up as with the water temperatures and blue sunny skies ,” he concluded .
