Boaters , Bank Anglers Score Hefty Rainbows

OREGON HOUSE - Trout fishing has been productive , with a couple of slow days mixed in , for trollers and shore anglers at Collins Lake . Some big fish in the 6 to 9 pound range have graced stringers lately . “ In the first five minutes of my latest trip , Marty Baumann of Sacramento hooked up a 9 lb . rainbow on a black Metal Head trolling fly ,” reported Cal Kellogg at fishhuntshoot . com . “ We were trolling at 10 feet deep at a speed of when he caught that fish . He ended the day with a limit of quality trout averaging 2 to 3 pounds .” “ On the day before , 4 anglers landed 17 trout ,” said Kellogg . “ Eugene Graham of Roseville and his wife , Charity , each landed a trout weighing 6 pounds while trolling flies and Trout Trix Worms at 10 to 12 feet deep . We ’ ve been seeing good fishing with trophy size fish mixed in .” He said bank anglers fishing from their campsites are also catching “ plenty of trout ” while tossing out PowerBait and other offerings . “ I keep seeing guys running for their rods after a biting trout rings the bells on their rods ,” he remarked . He noted that he is averaging 1 to 2 lightning trout per trip , in addition to the rainbows . The lightnings have averaged around 3 pounds each . Bass anglers are reporting catching and releasing around 20 fish per day , mostly spotted bass , while working the shoreline . “ They are using reaction baits , rip baits , spinner baits , Senkos and soft plastics right up on the bank ,” Kellogg noted . The crappie bite still hasn ’ t busted loose . “ There are no schools forming yet ,” Kellogg advised . “ We did catch several crappie to 2-1 ; 2 pounds while trolling for trout on recent trips . I do expect it to be a great crappie season with the lake being full .” The lake level is full and spilling and the surface water temperature has risen to 62.5 degrees . The water clarity is 7 ’ visibility . The latest trout plant featured 1,000 pounds of Mt . Lassen rainbows .
