Trolling Great for Kings , Rainbows and Bass

SACRAMENTO – If you want to have a chance to catch king salmon , rainbow trout , kokanee trout and three species of black bass on one trip , it ’ s hard to beat the fishing at Lake Berryessa now . “ Today I had Brad and Shannon out on Berryessa for a potluck trip and these 2 guys smoked them ,” reported Nate Kelsch of Big Nate ’ s Guide Service . “ Brad told me a landlocked king salmon was on his bucket list so we knocked that out right away with a donkey , then we proceeded to catch more kings , big beautiful broomtail rainbows , and tons of bass ( all 3 species safely released ) and a monster pike minnow . chased deep marks and bounced bottom to get reaction strikes on spoons , hoochies and stick baits . Burned a lot of fuel to locate fish today as they are constantly on the move .” After his previous trolling adventure , he also reported great success on a variety of species . :” Today I had George and Brittney out for some king salmon action on Lake Berryessa , and we had a blast ,” said Kelsch . “ We had a total of 13 solid hookups today and the crew won 6 of those battles and Brittney scored big fish honors with a big king .” “ We put some miles on the boat today , as fish are extremely scattered , and at depths from surface to 65 ft . Speed trolling is the ticket when these fish aren ’ t concentrated on bait . These fish are mean . They jump , they head shake , they bulldog you and try to wrap into other lines and downrigger cables ,” Kelsch emphasized . “ It ’ s an exciting fishery , With that being said , this is NOT a ‘ limit style fishery ,’ - we throw back 1 year old fish to let them mature and grow for everyone else to catch , but we do catch other species ( trout , kokanee , bass , catfish , crappie ) while targeting the kings ,” he added . “ What you can expect on a trip in which we target kings is hooking up between 5 to 20 + fish per trip . Every day is different . Most of the fish we catch are kings anywhere from 10 inches on up to 10 lbs . This week , in addition to some beautiful kings , we also caught some gorgeous Eagle lake trout , spotted bass , smallmouth bass , huge Sacramento pike minnows and small kokanee as well . “ Don Paganelli of Paganelli ’ s Bass Fishing Experience said the bass fishing is at Berryessa is “ still a little slow , since the top water bite hasn ’ t started to pan out yet .” “ The bass are now in post-spawn mode ,” Paganelli stated . “ Anglers are doing the best while using Senkos and drop shot and Carolina rigs .. The fish are holding at no set depth , since they ’ re chasing shad all over the lake . Sometimes they are blowing up on shad on the surface over 100 feet of water and other times they are blowing up on shad over 10 feet of water . Anglers are experiencing the top success while using Keitech lures and other small swimbaits .” On his latest guided fishing adventure ,, two anglers caught and released 5 fish to 3 pounds while fishing with Paganelli .“ The fish were a mixture of smallmouth , largemouth and spotted bass ,” advised Paganelli . “ They caught the bass while fishing drop shot rigs and small swimbaits in the main body .” Lake Berryessa is holding 1,362,004 acre feet of water , 85 percent of capacity and 104 percent of average .
