Los Vaqueros Reservoir

Stripers Dominate Summer Angling

LIVERMORE – Striped bass are providing the top fishing at this time at Los Vaqueros Reservoir , although catfish action is also productive . Most of the keeper stripers are in the 18 to 22 inch class , although two anglers caught two hefty fish on the Fourth of July weekend , according to Bud Hartman of the Los Vaqueros Marina . Rene of San Jose celebrated July Fourth by catching a 12 lb . striper on an anchovy from shore in the South Cove . Another angler , Manuel , landed an 11.86 lb . striped bass while soaking an anchovy in the South Cove on July 3 . “ Aoother angler just came into the shop with two keeper stripers after fishing anchovies off the Marina Pier ,” said Hartman . Anglers interested in catching stripers should use anchovies in the South Cove or off Pier 1 near the Los Vaqueros Marina . Trout pattern top water lures and swimbaits can also be effective when targeting the stripers . Catfish plants have not begun yet at Los Vaqueros this year , but “ Chasing Finn ” ( Joaquin ) and his daughter , Bree Gutierrez . spent the day catching their catfish limits at Los Vaqueros Watershed during a recent trip . A plant of 2,000 pounds of Mt . Lassen rainbows went into the reservoir on June 30 and 2,000 pounds of rainbows went in on June 23 . The trout averaged 1-1 / 2 to 2 pounds each , with some in the 3 to 5 lb . range in the mix . However , Hartman noted that the trout bite has slowed down during the recent heat wave . “ Anglers were getting limits right after the plant while fishing rainbow garlic Power Bait , but the action hasn ’ t been very good over the past few days ,” he stated . The water temperature is currently 68 degrees . The water level is currently at 125,000 acre feet . The water clarity has been good except for windy days . The watershed continues to experience morning and late afternoon winds consistently . If you are interested in renting a boat , it ’ s recommended to call ahead to check current wind conditions .
