Trollers Lay Into Feisty Stampede Kokanee Salmon
TRUCKEE – Trollers are catching limits of kokanee salmon while using pink hoochies and other lures , tipped with white corn , at 40 to 50 feet towards the dam at Stampede Lake . Most of the fish are in the 13 to 14 inch range , with a few in the 15 inch range . “ We caught easy limits of kokanee on Stampede this morning ,” reported Bret Brady of Bare Bones Guide Service . “ Little Will and his dad just ripped ‘ em today while trolling at 40 to 50 feet with anything pink or orange .” James Netzel of Tight Lines Guide Service also reported limit style fishing for kokanee on Stampede . “ We got some potluck action at Stampede today ,” said Netzel after his latest trolling adventure . “ It was one of those days where 50 % plus kokanee came unbuttoned ., but we stuck it out and managed boat limits plus 8 Lahontan cutthroats , including a couple real nice ones . I don ’ t know why the cutthroat decided to bite today , but I was using same gear as the day before .” On the previous trip , Netzel reported , “ Today started off strong but slowed to a crawl as the morning went on . Water skiers were making waves by 7 am but that really does not hurt the bite . The crazy thing was even with this heat we caught them on top putting lines in releases . The best depth this morning was 40 ’. The best presentation by far was pink moon jelly and orange moon jelly spinners from Paulina Peak Tackle . The

Watermelon UV didn ’ t take off till after 9 a . m .” According to Miles Zimmerman of Trout Creek outfitters in Truckee , “ Fly fishing for trout around Stampede dam is always a great place to start , but some of the arms such as Davies Creek arm , Sagehen Creek arm , or the Little Truckee arm are also good option .” “ Stampede can be a little tougher to figure out using fly gear , but with the larger size of this lake , the fish too can be larger than what ’ s found in our other waters . It ’ s definitely worth putting in time figuring out both the bass and trout in here if you ’ re trophy hunting . Using a boat out here will serve you better than a float tube due to its size , and covering water is a great way to find hotspots ,” he tipped .
“ Boca remains fishing very consistently , especially at two

key places , the dam or the Little Truckee inlet . If fishing around the dam , using a type 3-5 IPS sink line and using larger streamer patterns can be a great way to target the mega browns or mackinaw found here . If you ’ re looking for a more consistent bite , then suspending nymphs under an indicator at the inlet will be sure to get you a few dunk ,” he advised . “ Prosser is arguably fishing the best right now as both the cutthroat and the smallmouth bass are incredibly active along most areas of the lake . The lake is fishing well both from shore or from a boat or float tube , and this has become quite the fishery for these 2 species over the last few years . Using balanced leeches under an indicator is a great way to target both , otherwise they can be caught in a

variety of ways including streamers , smaller nymphs or even dry flies towards the evening hours . Even the smallmouth at Prosser will often take a midge under the indicator .”
Lake Tahoe
Mackinaw Are Munching All Day Long
Lake Tahoe - With the 4th of July behind us , the boat traffic on the lake has calmed down but the bite has not . We are still catching a lot mackinaw from the east , to west , and north side of the lake . I ’ ve been mostly trolling from 2 to 12 feet off of the bottom of the lake . The average size fish is anywhere from 1 to 7lbs . Our mid-morning trip yesterday had nothing smaller than 3lbs in the box . If you cover different parts of the lake , you can find biting fish all day long . Some areas will shut off and other areas turn on at different times throughout the day . Mackinaw are really good eating fish , especially out of Lake Tahoe , and I encourage you try some . These fish taste a lot better filleted . When you fillet them , you ’ ll want to cut out all the white fat because the white fat gives the fish a tart flavor to it . Once you do that , I can guarantee you will love eating these fish .
