Stripers Hit Chatterbaits In Shallows
SACRAMENTO – Alan Fong of Fisherman ’ s Warehouse reported top-notch striper fishing for experienced anglers tossing out lures in the Rio Vista Area of the Sacramento River . On Fong ’ s latest striper trip , Quinn Alexander and Fong caught and released 30 stripers while fishing chatterbaits in crawdad patterns along the grass lines in 2 to 4 feet of water . “ On our first stop , the stripers were in the shallows chasing crawdads ,” said Fong . “ It was fish on for couple hours ! Almost every cast got hit or hooked up . All were schoolie size fish from 4 to 7 pounds .” Fishing for largemouth bass in the Liberty Island Area in the North Delta has been “ pretty decent ” lately , said Fong . On his latest trip there , Denise Loo , Jennifer Noaks and Fong released 20 bass to 4 pounds while fishing with Senkos in red , pink and pumpkin and chatterbaits in 2 to 4 feet of water . “ We did OK but the big gals are gone ,” noted Fong . “ We have go look for ‘ em now that they are done spawning . My guess is they have moved out into the current !.” Smallmouth bass fishing in Steamboat , Miner and Sutter sloughs and the Sacramento River in the North Delta should be heating up soon . The fishing for these bronzebacks can be superb at times . “ When the fishing is going strong , three experienced anglers in a boat fishing with plastic worms can hook 80 to 100 6fish in a day ,” advised Mark Wilson . “ The fish range from 6 inches to 17 inches . We might limit out with 10 fish over 12 inches for two fishermen .” “ We toss out 4-1 / 2 inch worms on anything with riprap ,” he said . “ We use red patterns to match the crawdads . We fish with split shot or Zappu heads with the wacky-rigged worms . We let the worms fall and then them drag them on 6 to 8 lb . test line . We also catch some largemouths when fishing rocky structure with weeds .”

Anglers Battle Stripers and Shad
BUTTE CITY - Striper fishing in the Delta remains tough , but anglers are still hooking lots of striped bass on the Sacramento River from Butte City to Hamilton City and on the Feather River from Live Oak to Yuba City , according to Robert Weese at Northern California Guide Service . “ Boaters are catching the stripers while bait fishing with anchovies , sardines and sardines or while drifting live minnows in the deep holes on both rivers .” said Weese . “ The fish range from 3 to 40 pounds , with most in the 5 to 10 pound range .” ” Shad fishing is good one day , slow the next for anglers in both rivers ,” said Weese . “ We ’ re anchoring up in the boat and fishing with pink and chartreuse grubs on small jigheads . We ’ ve been finding the best fishing in the mornings from 6:30 a . m . to 9:30 a . m .”

Information : ( 530 ) 755-7196 . Brian Willis at Johnson ’ s Bait and Tackle confirmed that anglers are still catching limits of stripers on the Feather and Sacramento rivers , but fishing pressure has slowed down from what it was during the recent heat wave . For maximum success on stripers , Willis recommended tossing out Bombers , jerkbaits , swimbaits and black plastic worms on the Feather River from Star Bend to Beer Can Beach or the Sacramento from Colusa to Princeton . Anglers are also hooking stripers while bait fishing with cut sardines or anchovies . “ There are some big stripers out there on both rivers ,” he noted . “ Two anglers recently weighed in fish weighing 57 and 30 pounds .”
