BODEGA BAY
Big Rockfish and Lingcod Hit Deck
BODEGA BAY – The New Sea Angler hasn ’ t been out the deep water for rockfish and lingcod because of persistent northwest winds along the Sonoma County Coast , but fishing has been great for rockfish and lingcod in the shallows . The rockfish and lingcod fishing in the Bodega Bay Area opened to all depths on July 16 . The latest trip by the New Sea Angler on July 20 yielded 16 lingcod up to 18 pounds and 110 rockfish for 11 anglers . A trip by the boat on July 19 produced 130 rockfish and 26 lingcod up to 20 pounds for 13 passengers . A trip on July 17 by the New Sea Angler yielded 130 rockfish and 6 lingcod up to 27 pounds for 13 anglers . “ The anglers on these shallow water trips are catching vermilion , canary , brown , black , China and other rockfish ,” said Captain Rick Powers of the Bodega Bay Sportfishing Center . “ Ninety percent of the fish are bottom grabbers ; there are hardly any school fish .” Before the wind prevented the boat from fishing the deep water , anglers were catching limits of “ extremely large ” vermilion , bocaccio , yellowtail , widow and other rockfish at 320 to 330 feet deep while fishing different spots each day , said Powers . Many trips also produced limits of lingcod . They not only caught hefty lingcod and rockfish , but boated good numbers of petrale sole and sablefish ( black cod ) on the deep reefs . The lingcod average 14 to 16 pounds , with lots of fish in the high teens and lower twenties . Anglers are using jigs for the rockfish and chrome bars and swimbaits for the lingcod . “ We ’ re getting the fish on flies , bars , swimbaits and shrimp flies -- anything we put in the water gets devoured in the deep water ,” Powers noted .
