Practice for Largemouth Bass Tournament Confirms Striped Bass Addiction

I recently purchased a Skeeter Bass Boat and I have all the bass fishing equipment I need to fish tournaments so I thought I would fish the Ultimate Frog Challenge on July 29th and 30th . I had one week before the tournament , and I haven ’ t fished for bass on the delta for a long time so I thought it may be a good idea to get on the water to get some practice in . I launched at B & W Resort and took a short boat ride to the San Joaquin River and quickly found a spot on the corner of the San Joaquin and one of the sloughs . I have caught fish in this spot in the past so I thought this would be a great starting point . What I like about this spot is that it is a turn on the levy , it has current , thick cover , and even some sparse tulle . The tide was right , the current was flowing , and the sun was just starting to rise . I stopped the boat , dropped the trolling motor and grabbed a rod that had my favorite frog tied up and ready to go . I started chucking the frog and on my third cast a small curious bass blew up next to the frog but didn ’ t eat it . This small blowup gave me confidence that what I was doing was right . Then , I heard some frogs croaking . I was really feeling like I was in the right area and had high hopes of catching some nice largemouth bass .

GONE FISHING by Dan Bacher

AN FRANCISCO - Virginia
Salvador of Vacaville took a well-deserved break from her full time job as a laboratory scientist and weekend occupation as a charter boat captain on San Francisco Bay out of Fisherman ’ s Wharf to pursue the vibrantly-colored peacock bass in Florida . Salvador was attending the ICAST sportfishing trade show in Orlando from July 10 to July 14 as a representative for Old Town Kayaks – and went to fish with Captain Bill Lepree of South Florida Bass Charters for the introduced tropical fish species in Lake Worth , Florida . “ It was an epic half day trip ,” said Salvador . “ My friend , Kanani Wong , and I caught and released 20 plus peacock bass . The fish ranged from 1 to 5 pounds . Wong caught the biggest fish , a 5 pounder , while using live shad .” “ These bass are incredible fighters ,” she said . “ They are way more aggressive than smallmouth bass , but are very similar in how they shake their heads when you battle them . You can tell right away that you have hooked a peacock by the way they shake their heads .” Salvador has fished for peacock bass with Lepree since 2017 . On the latest trip , Salvador also hooked and released an African cichlid while Kanani landed a clown knifefish ,
