We ended the day with 1 halibut up to 30 lbs ., 3 lingcod , 4 cabezon , and plenty to bottom dwellers with a few school fish mixed in ,” said Cabanas . 43 Lb . Halibut Tops Coastal Catches
SANTA CRUZ – California halibut are back on the bite off Capitola , near the Santa Cruz Harbor and up the coast near Wilder Beach . And there are some huge halibut showing in the catches of trollers and live bait drifters .
Big fish honors go to Dale , who landed a 43 lb . halibut while using a jacksmelt off Natural Bridges . Another local angler , Jack , caught a 26 lb . halibut on dead squid off Santa Cruz , reported Todd Fraser at Bayside Marine . Boaters are using live and dead squid and live jacksmelt and mackerel for the halibut . Anglers are reminded that the daily bag and possession limit for California halibut is now two fish in California waters north of Point Sur , Monterey County . “ The rock fishing has improved in the shallow water ,” stated Fraser . “ The deep water rock fishing off Davenport has been early in the morning before the wind blows . Anglers are boating limits of vermilion , chilipepper , bocaccio and greenspotted rockfish while working shrimp flies , bars , jugs and swimbaits .”

Surf casters are bagging striped bass while tossing out white swimbaits and Battle Star lures off Marina Beach and barred surfperch while fishing Berkley Gulp ! Worms off Manresa Beach , noted Fraser . Boats out of Chris ’ Fishing Trips in Monterey continue to bring in limits of rockfish and an occasional lingcod while fishing both deep and shallow water . For example , the Checkmate returned with limits of rockfish ( 200 ) and 2 lingcod for 20 anglers on July 21 , while the Caroline came back with limits of rockfish ( 200 ) for 20 anglers the same day . The anglers are hooking the rockfish while fishing an array of squid-baited shrimp flies , bars , jigs , swimbaits and other offerings . To meet
