Sonoma Coast Shallow Water Kicks Out Rockfish Limits , Lingcod
BODEGA BAY – Persistent northwest winds have kept the boats from fishing the deep water of the Sonoma County Coast , where lingcod and rockfish action has been superb , over the past couple of weeks . However , the anglers aboard the New Sea Angler have been bagging limits of rockfish and some lingcod in shallow water before the wind comes up in the mornings .
The New Sea Angler returned with 11 limits of rockfish on Saturday , August 5 and 14 limits of rockfish and some lingcod on August 6 after fishing shallow water . A previous trip to the shallow water produced 17 lingcod up to 22 pounds and 180 rockfish for 18 anglers . “ The anglers on these shallow water trips are catching vermilion , canary , brown , black , China and other rockfish ,” said Captain Rick Powers of the Bodega Bay Sportfishing Center . “ Ninety percent of the fish are bottom grabbers ; there are still hardly any school fish in the bags .” Anglers have been hooking the fish while using shrimp flies , bars , swimbaits and bars . With the return of calm weather in the forecast , Powers is expected to return to the offshore deep water . Before the wind prevented the boat from fishing the deep water , anglers were catching limits of “ extremely large ” vermilion , bocaccio , yellowtail , widow and other rockfish at 320 to 330 feet deep while fishing different spots each day , said Powers . Many trips also produced limits of lingcod . They not only caught hefty lingcod and rockfish , but boated good numbers of petrale sole and sablefish ( black cod ) on the deep reefs . The lingcod average 14 to 16 pounds , with lots of fish in the high teens and lower twenties . Anglers are using jigs for the rockfish and chrome bars and swimbaits for
the lingcod . - Dan Bacher

Live Bait Drifters Nail Rockfish and Lingcod Limits Off Marin Coast
SAN FRANCISCO – Anglers venturing out to the Marin County Coast are bagging limits of rockfish and lingcod , while the top-notch halibut action continues in San Francisco Bay and off Seal Rock on days with smaller tides . “ Today we caught limits of lingcod to 12 pounds and limits of rockfish for 8 people along the Marin County Coast ,” said Aaron Anfinson , Captain of the Bass Tub . “ We fished at around 70 feet deep . After catching the rockfish and lingcod , we landed two halibut at the South Bar .” On the previous trip , the 10 anglers landed limits of rockfish , limits of lingcod to 15 pounds and limits of halibut to 30 pounds while drifting live anchovies aboard the Bass Tub . “ The halibut averaged 18 to 20 pounds ,” he noted . “ We hooked the rockfish and lingcod along the Marin County Coast off Seal Rock .” “ Here we go -limits again ,” reported Mike Rescino , Captain of the Lovely Martha , after
