both deep and shallow water . The lingcod numbers have varied a lot from day to day . For example , the Checkmate returned with limits of rockfish ( 220 ) and 24 lingcod for 22 anglers on August 3 , while the boat came back with limits of rockfish ( 200 ) for 16 anglers on August 2 . On August 1 , the Checkmate checked in with limits of rockfish ( 200 ) and 4 lingcod for 20 anglers . On July 31 , Checkmate returned with limits of rockfish ( 190 ) and 21 lingcod for 19 anglers . The fishermen are hooking the rockfish while fishing an array of squid-baited shrimp flies , bars , jigs , swimbaits and other offerings . Joey Stagnaro of Kahuna Sportfishing in Moss Landing reported that anglers are continuing to catch limits of quality rockfish , along with some big lingcod , while fishing shrimp flies , bars and other offerings off the Santa Cruz Coast and at the edge of the Monterey Marine Canyon . “ We ’ ve been catching chilipepper , yellowtail , canary and vermilion rockfish in deep water ,” said Stagnaro . “ We ’ re averaging about one lingcod rod . The fish are averaging 10 to 12 pounds , with the largest boated this season weighing 26 pounds .” Private boaters are using live and dead squid and live jacksmelt and mackerel to nail halibut in Monterey Bay . Anglers are reminded that the daily bag and possession limit for California halibut is now two fish in California waters north of Point Sur ,

Monterey County . “ The halibut fishing was a little slower near the Mile Buoy today ,” reported Todd Fraser at Bayside Marine in Santa Cruz on August 4 . “ The anglers working the Capitola area found some nice halibut in 40- 60 feet of water .”
