Rainbow Trout Bite Turns On !

WINTERS – After a long period of tough fishing , the trout bite has finally turned on at Lake Berryessa . Experienced anglers have been catching limits of quality holdover rainbows every day . “ This morning my 4 man crew of Abdul , Elias , John , and Ford scored 4 limits of big , beautiful rainbow trout at Berryessa ,’ said Nate Kelsch of Big Nate ’ s Guide Service on September 25 . “ These fish were going nuts this morning , with multiple jumps , running at the boat and bulldogging us , so once we got everyone on the right technique to land the fish it was on ,” he noted . “ They ended up going 20 fish for 35 hook-ups by 9:45 a . m . The shallower and faster we went the better the bite was once again . Power trolling spoons thru the highest bait balls in the water column is the ticket . Abdul even caught a trout during clean up in 8 foot of water , so that tells you something ,” he explained . On the previous day , Kelsch reported similarly epic action . “ The early limit train rolls on ,” he divulged . “ This morning I had Dennis and Darwin out on Berryessa for another epic rainbow trout beat down . After dropping our first 5 fish , these 2 got on their A game , landing 10 of the next 12 gorgeous rainbows and filled the bag with their limits in 1 hour and 45 minutes . Few Anglers Are Targeting Kokanee , Fish Move Upriver to Spawn

DOBBINS – Fishing pressure at Bullard ’ s Bar Reservoir has been very light since the kokanee salmon moved up into the Yuba River arm to spawn . “ The few anglers out on the lake have been catching next year ’ s fish , ranging from 9 to 10 inches long ,” reported Craig Newton of Willfish Tackle . “ They are trolling pink and orange hoochies behind dodgers at 30 to 40 feet deep .” On his most recent trip before the fish migrated upriver to spawn , Newton found solid kokanee fishing at Bullards with John of Glitterbugs and his friend .

“ We caught 30 kokanee averaging 12 to 13 inches long , with a few over 13 inches . The fish were 50 to 80 feet deep in the main body west of Garden Point ,” stated Newton . “ Most of the fish had lost their scales , with some fish getting colored up ,” he noted . “ We used spinners and hoochies , tipped with white corn , to hook the fish .” Bullards Bar is holding 619,428 acre-feet of water , 73 percent of capacity and 114 percent of average . This group of anglers hooked , landed and released several sturgeon while fishing with Delta Sportfishing . The sturgeon season is getting off to a great start and should continue to get better .
