Truckee River Fly Fishing Report and Forecast : We don ’ t typically see fish spawning on the Truckee due to its size , this is the time of year when our browns do their yearly dance , and we ask you to be aware of this , avoiding targeting any fish exhibiting any behavior associated with spawning , and avoid wading on or near any trout redds to keep their eggs free of silt or sediment , thus keeping them viable . This is of paramount importance to us , so please , if you have any questions about what to watch out for or the best practices during this time , don ’ t hesitate to ask . The Truckee continues to fish very well this week with fired up fish , light angling pressure and some incredibly consistent flows downstream of Truckee . The excellent fishing conditions continue all the way east of Sparks , where fall time flows and temps are better down here than we ’ ve seen in

a long time . In short , most of this river system is fishing great and regardless of where you choose to fish for the day you will likely find some great numbers and great size of fish . Your fly selection will vary a bit depending on what section you choose , but a couple of choices that you can ’ t go wrong with this time of year would be BWO nymphs in a 16-18 and zebra midges in a 18-22 . These bugs can be fished from the head waters to the lowermost fishable water on the Truckee and should be in every Truckee River angler ’ s fly box . Up higher , I . E . Glenshire , we are seeing greater quantities of October caddis . As you head down into the canyon expect to fish more stoneflies . By the time you get into Reno and beyond , put some time in on the crawdads , a great bug for the fall time out east ! While the swung streamer presentation still remains a bit slow , the dead drifted streamer on a tight line rig has been deadly . The key with this method would be to fish with your feet . This means covering runs fast , often you will hook fish within your first 3-6 casts . If you know you are getting your flies on or near the bottom , and you haven ’ t had any takes , keep moving . Didn ’ t have any luck after an hour or so ? Mix up your flies , the type of water you ’ re focusing on , or consider lightening up your tippet , but don ’ t go too light with streamers , the takes can be vicious and the fish that eat other fish aren ’ t typically small ! With water temperatures typically peaking at around 3-4 PM , the afternoons continue to be more productive than the mornings and we are focusing on fishing from 11 until dark . If , however , your window to fish is in the mornings don ’ t let that stop you from getting out , there ’ s still plenty of fish to be had ! The Little Truckee River Fly Fishing Report & Forecast : The Little Truckee River has seen an increase in flows this week and as of today it sits at 132 CFS . This is pretty spectacular for Mid-October ! At these flows , nymphing will be a great way to find fish right now . Indicators , dry droppers or euro nymph are all great ways to present subsurface on this river and all have their place . The dry fly bite has been consistent , particularly in the top lot , where the BWO ’ s and midges come off almost like clockwork . Midges in the mornings , BWO ’ s mid-day into the afternoons , some PMD ’ s throughout the afternoon , and caddis at dusk . As always , an accurate fly selection , covering all life stages will be the best way to continuously find fish on this river . Light tippet and a stealthy approach is equally as important . While we have yet to see the browns spawning en masse , it should be assumed that they are in there , and we ask you to remain aware both when fishing and wading to avoid disrupting these fish . Please do not target any spawning fish and avoid wading in or around any spawning areas to assure a successful spawn of our wild fish . - Miles Zimmerman , Trout Creek Outfitters
