Lahontan Cutthroat fishing improving
The trout are still hitting midges and leeches . Be sure to have a good selection of bugs and to change patterns often . In general larger bugs seem to work better in the wintertime . This would be the case for both midges and leeches , with midges in a size 10-12 often best and larger profiles on your leeches often outfishing the skinner leeches we prefer in the spring . If indicator fishing , focus on depths of 8-14 feet and areas with a significant drop off . Cory Kellar of Hendrix Outdoors in Fallon , Nevada sent in this report : We talked to a bunch of shore fishermen the last two weeks with mixed reviews . Seems like the conventional guys throwing spoons and jigs are doing better than the fly guys . Fish are in the top 30 ’ of the water column . They are hanging right at the drop off at the 40 ’ -80 ’ contour . The trollers are doing much better the shore fishermen . Seems the guys that know where the drop offs are close to shore are doing very well . The trout really haven ’ t moved in to the shallows yet . We are doing the best with chartreuse and green colors trolling spoons and Yakima Bait Maglips . The hottest colors for us are red dot frogs , bleeding frogs , and bleeding firetiger . etc . We ’ ve been long lining the spoons150 ’ out and on the downriggers at 15 to 30 feet deep . We are also running the Maglips on the surface off the sideplanners . A friend from a fly shop said he and a buddy have been doing well at Blockhouse Beach flyfishing with indicators and zebra midges in olive with gold colors as well as beadheads .
