Trout Creek Outfitters According to Cory Kellar of Hendrix Outdoors , the Pyramid cutthroat are in a pre spawn mode . Last Saturday they were out on the lake and the bite didn ’ t start till about 10 am . They were trolling with erratic baits like Scatter Raps , Lyman plugs , Yakima Bait Mag Lips and Apex lures . They Found a better bite on the East side of the lake at Anderson Bay and Red Bay . They trolled in the top 30 feet of water with long lines 150-200 ’ out . Best colors were greens , darker blues and blacks , and also purples . The lake was calm and Cory said he thinks the darker colors were better because of the glassy conditions . He said the trout are moody so it ’ s really hit and miss just you need put the time in . He thinks it will be an early spawn this year . Cory noted that they were still seeing both the baitfish and the trout in deeper water than usual this time of year . The most he saw were 20 to 30 feet deep in 50 to 100 feet of water . He said many of the boaters , float tubers and kayakers were doing better than the shore fishermen because they could get out to deeper water .

Spring Striper Bite Starts

RIO VISTA -- The spring striped bass bite has begun on the San Joaquin and Sacramento rivers , while sturgeon fishing is up and down . “ Striper fishing has been great for those going out ,” said Jeff Soo Hoo of Soo Hoo Sportfishing . “ Anglers have been doing the best while trolling with Yo-Zuris . I will be available for spring striper trips this coming weekend .” Mark Wilson reported fast striper action on his latest trip on the San Joaquin River from Three Mile Slough to Prisoner ’ s Point on Friday , March 15 . “ Three us hooked 37 fish , including 17 keepers to 5 pounds ,” said Wilson . “ We trolled with deepdiving Yo-Zuris on the incoming tide . The fish were small , going up to 5 pounds . We kept a total of six fish . The San Joaquin River water was clear on the incoming tide . The Sacramento River water is dirtier at this time .” “ Sturgeon fishing is really good some days and tough on others ,” said Zack Medinas of Gatecrasher Fishing Adventures . “ There is a lot of runoff and water logged-trees are creating a hazard on the water . On Saturday , we caught one sturgeon in the low forties and one going 45 inches .” On a previous trip , Medinas and a fishing buddy caught and released 4 fish , including 2 in the new slot size in the low forties . Medinas has been fishing Suisun Bay and the West Delta region . “ There are a lot of 34 inch to 36 inch undersized fish out there that are the result of good sturgeon spawns in 2017 and 2019 . There was considerable recruitment to the sturgeon population during those years ,” he added . Under emergency regulations adopted by the California Fish and Game Commission in Nov . 2023 , harvest has been reduced to one white sturgeon for 2023

seasonally upstream of the Highway 50 bridge on the Sacramento River and Interstate 5 bridge on the San Joaquin River from January 1 to May 31 , 2024 . This upstream area will re-open to catch and release fishing on June 1 , 2024 , once spawning season is over .
