Shasta Lake Spring Trout and Salmon Derby

he 21st annual Shasta Lake
Spring Trout & Salmon Derby took place on the first weekend of May at Lakehead on the upper Sacramento arm of Shasta Lake . The lake was full to the brim this year and absolutely gorgeous . The Spring derby includes brown and rainbow trout ( only 1 brown weighed in per day per team ), kokanee salmon and King salmon . We stayed at the lovely Tsasdi Resort at Lakehead and we had 3 teams in our large cabin , including myself and John Brassfield , Mark Kalinowski and Al Fiske , and Kurt and Jen Kock who traveled all the way from Wyoming to fish the derby . We moored all 3 boats at the Tsasdi docks right below the resort . Thursday evening , we gathered at our nice cabin at Tsasdi and had a wonderful dinner of barbequed steaks , both beef and venison , combined with potatoes , rice , green salad and red wine . What a great way to start a long weekend of

t has been a few years since I have been to South Lake Tahoe and Amy , my wife , hadn ’ t been there for many years . In April , we had a wedding celebration and decided that Tahoe would be a great place to spend some time together . One of my goals during this trip was to get Amy out on the lake so she could experience the sunrise while on a boat in the middle of the lake . Plus , she loves to fish so it would be a huge bonus if we were able to catch some fish as well . isEarly the next morning we arrived to the marina and we all boarded the Prophet . The boat is gorgeous and fishing . The official derby is always on Saturday and Sunday , so we all pre-fish on Friday to try to get a “ lay of the Land ” so to speak . Friday morning was clear and beautiful , with a slight north wind and a cool temperature of 45 degrees at 5:30 am . John and I always explore on Friday , going to places we don ’ t normally fish , saving our “ good spots ” for the real derby days . We headed out in John ’ s 18 foot Duckworth and decided to run up the McCloud arm to see what it looked like . It was a long boat ride with the

really comfortable . The first goal for the day was to go catch some minnows that we intended to use for bait . We motored to a point on the lake and were pretty close to the shoreline when the deckhand , Nate , tossed out some traps . The traps were baited with Rice Crispy Treats and the minnows loved them ! It didn ’ t take long to catch enough bait for the day . Once we made bait it only took a few minutes before we were fishing zone . This is where I learned how Tahoe Sportfishing puts the minnow on the hook . They thread a needle
