Anglers Enjoy Solid Bass and Catfish Bite

IONE - The Lake Amador Resort released 500lbs of Golds and Rainbows in late May so some trout are still being caught by trollers that are using spoons in 40-50ft deep . Sheree , with Lake Amador Resort , reported that the bass bite has been great first thing in the morning and early evening . Big fish to 8lbs are being caught but anglers have been keeping quiet about what they are using . If you want to get bites you can ’ t go wrong with drop shots and Senkos in green / red and green / purple . The catfish bite is heating , according to Sheree . She says , “ anglers are fishing 10-15 ft deep with anchovies , chicken liver and nightcrawler and catching fish in the 6-10lb range . The Lake level is about 5ft from full , the surface water temperature is in the mid 70s , and water clarity is about 8-10ft .

This angler holds up two nice mackinaw that he caught while fishing with Chris Ditter on Lake Tahoe . Trolling and using minnows have been producing quality fish .

AMERICAN RIVER

Boaters and Bank Anglers Nail Steelhead

SACRAMENTO-Alex Mendleski , with Fisherman ’ s Warehouse , reported the stripers are being caught on the American River by anglers that are tossing swimbaits , Keitech ’ s , Duo-Realis Jerkbaits , and even topwater baits . He also reported , most of the stripers are small but there are a few big fish in the mix and are being caught by anglers using shad . Kailyr Perry , of Kailyr ’ s Guide Service , reported catching 7 steelhead this week . He says , “ steelhead fishing is phenomenal for this time of year and most of the fish he is catching is in the 1½ lb range with the biggest weighing about 4lbs .” Kailyr says , “ the flashier the lure the better and he has been catching most of his fish on 3.0 and 3.5 Mag Lips . Bank anglers are also catching steelhead while using nightcrawlers under a bobber .

“ Shad fishing has spotty because of the cold water temperatures ”, Perry noted . “ Anglers are catching shad while using pink grubs under a bobber or a carolina rig with the

Bloody Maria Fly being the top producing bait .”

Trout , King Salmon , and Bass Are All Chewing

SACRAMENTO – The bass bite has great for the last two months on topwater baits , said Don Paganelli of Paganelli ’ s Bass Fishing Experience . Paganelli said , “ the shad spawn was really good in the month of May and ever since then the topwater bite has been really good . Shad pattern popper style baits have been producing best .”

The topwater bite usually lasts until about 9:30 -10:00 in the morning then he switches techniques and starts using soft plastics and dragging worms . The fish have been averaging 1 ½ - 3lbs but he is also landing fish in the 4-5lb class . “ This morning we had Matt and Justin out on Berryessa for some more RED HOT potluck action and it was EPIC once again ,” noted Nate Kelsch of Big Nate ’ s Guide Service . “ 18 fish before 9:15am . Not only was the amount of fish amazing but the quality was unreal . These guys 4 largest trout weighed in at 19lbs . 2 limits of trout with some over 5lbs , 2 nice king salmon , 5 smallmouth bass to 4lbs , and a big crappie , and a big ole squawfish .” “ It doesn ’ t get much better than that ! Power trolling spoons are still dominating our catches from the surface to 80ft deep ” said Kelsch .

Bucks Lake Kicks Out Trout & Kokanee

Quincy- Capt . Cal Kellogg of FHSFishing . com recently spent 4 days fishing Bucks Lake from his Hobie Pro Angler 14 kayak and enjoyed good fishing for brown trout , rainbow trout and kokanee . “ Good size trout are on tap at Bucks Lake and the kokanee are plentiful this year . You ’ ll find a mix of brown and rainbows holding from 15 to 30 feet deep . My top offerings were Soft Plastic Trout Trix Minnows and Yakima Bait Cripplures . The browns are running 16 to 20 inches and I brought a pair of 3 plus pound rainbows to the kayak ,” said Kellogg . “ The kokanee are starting to school of and scattered all over the lake . I encountered a few small salmon in the 8-10 inch class that I released . Most of the adults sockeyes are running 12 to 14 inches . They are fat fish and full of fight . I caught kokanee on several different combinations , but nothing worked as well as a purple and white UV Uncle Larry ’ s Spinner teamed with a 4 inch Fish Eye dodger . The best depth range for the ‘ kokes was 25 to 35 feet deep ,” Kellogg went on . “ I marked big numbers of mackinaw in several different areas of the lake , but I wasn ’ t able to get any of them to hit despite running several different plugs , spoons and soft plastics ,” Kellogg concluded .
