DAVIS LAKE
Trout Fishing Remains Strong While Bass Bite Heats Up
PORTOLA – Trollers and bank anglers are nailing trout at Lake Davis . “ Bank anglers are catching trout while using PowerBait and worms with Mallard Cove being the best area of the lake ,” said Jeanne Graham at J & J ’ s Grizzly Store and Camping Resort . Graham went on to say , “ boaters are trolling tube flies and Baby Simons lures 10-15 feet while others are staying close to the surface . Most of the fish have been in 19- 20in range with some measuring in at 22in and pushing 3lbs .” Flying fishing has also head up since the hex hatch and damsel hatch has started . Bass bite has started but most anglers are keeping it a secret and not providing much information but fish up to 6lbs are being caught . The docks are now in at the Honker Cove , Lightning Tree and Old Camp Five boat ramps .
EAGLE LAKE
Water Clarity is an Issue
Eagle Lake is suffering from an unusual water condition . The water is very murky , very green and looks like pea soup . Visibility is less than 2 feet in some areas . Both trollers and fly fisherman are struggling to catch one to two fish per boat per day . The water clarity is a little better on the east side of the lake off Eagle ’ s Nest . One boat reported catching 11 trout to 22 inches and four pounds in that area one day . Then only 7 the next day and a big zero on the third day . Their best lures were brightly colored spoons in firetiger , chartreuse and bright pink and white . All trolled at 2.2 mph and 15 to 25 feet deep . Some of the guides said the fishing is so slow , they are they are rescheduling their trips later in the summer and into the fall . No one is quite sure why the water quality is so poor , especially after the lake rising almost 2 1 \ 2 feet over the winter . EAST BAY LAKES ROUNDUP
Trout In Mix For At Least A Couple More Plants
OAKLAND - There should be no doubt that this has been one of the best East Bay trout seasons in recent years . The East Bay Regional Parks District , and particularly Joe Sullivan , the fishery manager , have exceeded every expectation with over 59,000 pounds of trout planted since January including some massive lightning trout . The season has drawn to a close but has ended with some heavy gold ! There were some rough spots mid-season when East Bay action was not going as expected . Heavy weather pounded the region , the lakes were high and off color , and in some instances , sediment like we saw at Lake Del Valle threatened plants all together . Angling pressure was light and fish counts were low , but heavy plants , especially plants of lightning trout brought out even the most reluctant anglers . This year there wasn ’ t one district lake that didn ’ t produce a double-digit rainbow and most lakes produced several . We saw some big bows planted in the early season and while the lightning were not nearly as large , there were still some over 5 pounds . After the first of the year , we saw some exceptional fishing that lasted until the most recent plant this week . Overall , Lake Del Valle produced dozens of fish over 5 pounds , a rainbow that broke 11-pounds , a lightning trout exceeding 11.04 pounds and at least a half dozen just over or just under the doubledigit mark . Shadow Cliffs produced well above what had been expected . This lake has now fully recovered and received the attention that it deserves . Locals saw both bows and lightning to 10 pounds . Quarry Lakes saw some of the best early season action with solid limits from the beach , cove , and row . Lake Chabot presented anglers
