We were right on the beach , but because of the drop off , we were still in 20 to 25 feet of water . The screen of the Lowrance fish finder lit up with huge balls of bait , and some serious looking fish marks below them . Every time we trolled through them , we hooked up with a fat Eagle Lake rainbow ! We would troll in and out and then turn around and do it again , staying in 30 feet of water or less . The hot spoon was a 2 inch chartreuse / orange Silver Horde Kingfisher lite that caught the first 4 fish in a row . And these trout were hot and strong , giving us a great fight that lasted 10 minutes or more a couple of times . Several were over 4 pounds , with the largest going 22 ½ inches and 4.5 pounds . The bite shut off around 1 pm , and we moved around the lake looking for bait and fish . We tried the youth camp area where we founds thousands of baitfish , but no trout that would take our offerings . We ended the day with 8 trout to the boat , and kept 4 that weighed right at 16 pounds in the fish bag ! We recovered the boat at the launch and headed north to Spalding to my cabin . The weather was improving , and it was a cool 67 degrees in the afternoon . We barbequed steaks and baked potatoes at the cabin and got ready for the next day . Monday we were at the boat ramp about 6:15 am and headed back to Eagle ’ s Nest . The

Finally , Brian Garcia of Alta and Ron Nedved of Colfax joined me on a trip up to the famous lake . We left early Sunday morning after a few days of unusually cool , rainy weather in Northern California . We arrived at the south shore boat ramp about 8:30 am and launched The Fish Sniffer 21 ’ Rogue Jet Coastal . The lake had come up about a foot or so from last year , and launching was no problem . The water temperature was 64 degrees and the air temp was 38 and warming quickly . We motored out of the marina and towards Eagles Nest on the east side of the lake . We trolled the ledge right below the mountain for a half hour or so with no luck . We were trolling spoons at 2.4 mph .
