Fall Trout Bite Has Turned On

PORTOLA – Thanks to colder outside temperatures the water temperature has cooled off and now it is in the low 60s . That is exactly what was needed to turn the trout bite on for both bank anglers and trollers . Jeanne Graham at J & J ’ s Grizzly Store and Camping Resort , reported , “ bank fishing has picked up in Mallard Cove for anglers using rainbow colored PowerBait and worms . Trollers are landing trout while using Baby Simon in blue color . Dick Nite Spoons in copper and red heads are also producing some fish ,” says Graham Fly fisherman are keeping what they are using pretty quiet but they are catching fish while fishing around Fairview Point and Jenkins . Stayed for more information about Maybe Ice Fishing Derby in February . The derby date is scheduled for Feb . 15th and it is a fundraiser for Plumas County Search and Rescue .

Trollers Land Big Rainbows

LA GRANGE – Monte Smith , Gold Country Sportfishing , has been fishing Don Pedro and caught some very nice rainbow trout . On a recent trip he had three clients and they caught 14 rainbows ranging in size from two to nearly 5 pounds . They caught them at depths from 55 to 90 feet and were using Monte ’ s custom made spoon .

Fishing Slows to One-Two Fish on Average Per Day

Tim Noxon of Fish Traveler Guide Service checked in with a current Eagle Lake report . This new report is exactly the opposite of what he gave us the first week of September . For that report , his quote was “ I will remember August of 2024 at Eagle Lake as one of the best months of fishing I have ever experienced here in over 20 years of guiding . The minnows have shown up in massive numbers off the eastern shoreline and the trout are on ’ em . We ’ ve had limits of October and November sized fish every day out . We landed a 5 lb fish on three of our last four trips .” That was then – this is now : Tim said this week there is nothing good to report . Fishing is extremely slow . Only 1-2 trout per boat per day average . The minnows that were abundant off Eagles Nest disappeared at the end of September . And the Eagle Lake trout also disappeared . We did land a 5lb 7oz rainbow on 9 / 25 when the minnows were still abundant . The water temperature is unseasonably warm at 65 degrees . We need 7 days of low 30 ’ s nighttime temperatures to move fish into the shallows and get the bite going . Currently I am postponing my guided trips due to the slow bite .
